Surging Plains golf teams earn way to State C tourney

It’s that kind of smile that makes it all worthwhile.

The kind of smile we are talking about here, “that” kind of smile was all over Brandt Snead’s face as he met coach Lisa Brown after shooting perhaps the golf round of his life at the Seeley-Swan Invitational at Double Arrow golf course Thursday.

By carding a 91 on Double Arrow, Brandt, a freshman pared almost 20 strokes off his previous best effort and automatically qualified for the State C tournament at Riverside Country Club in Bozeman and will now make plans on joining teammate Duncan Chisholm with the boys, and girls Kaylee Cole, Kimmy Curry, Grace Horton and Lexa Craft on making that big trip east for the tourney next Tuesday and Wednesday.

“You should have seen the smile on Brandt’s face, he played the best round of golf of his life and was pretty happy about it,” Brown said. “Of course, I was pretty happy about it, too.”

Brown and fellow head Plains golfing coach Don Stamm were smiling even more Monday after Horton and Craft were able to card 97 and 113, respectively at the Wild Horse course Monday in a final qualifying event, giving Plains a full girls team of four heading into Bozeman. Three golfers’ scores are used for scoring in Class C but each team is allowed four spots in the tourney if they have shot the qualifying score to get there.

Brown said Drew Carey, another freshman, played well Monday but just missed the boys’ qualifying score, as did Nick Gumm.

In Seeley Lake, Brandt’s 91 paced the Horsemen, Chisholm carded 105, Carey 115 and Gumm 118. With the Trotters, Curry posted a 111, Cole 113, Horton 133, Craft 139 and Tessa Williams 160.

Brown said that her players are getting more excited about golf all the time, and that the team is now planning on running a camp for fifth through eighth grade players this summer, in an attempt to get more kids interested in the program.

In the meantime, more practice makes perfect.

“We are done competing until State,” she said. “We will work on our games – particularly our short games – this week trying to get ready.”

The Plains golf team will head to Bozeman Monday for a practice round at Riverside that day, and will then compete in the State C tournament Tuesday and Wednesday.
