Kalispell angler wins spring Mack Days

 


The 2021 Spring Mack Days Fishing Event on Flathead Lake concluded with a total of 27,547 lake trout entries. Eight hundred anglers entered during the nine-week event, with 228 turning in one or more lake trout entries to qualify for the prize drawings.

Kalispell angler Kolton Turner won the spring event with 1,856 total entries and an 18-day average of 87.67. Second place went to Jason Mahlen of Kalispell (1,701, 83.11), third was Bob Turner of Kalispell (1,447, 70.67), Sam Cusker of Bigfork was fourth (780, 42.67) and Mike Benson of Lonepine was fifth (902, 41.83). The Top 10 category also included Steve Benson of Spokane Valley, Washington, in sixth place (848, 41.22), Larry Karper of Florence in seventh place, (767, 39.5), Ken Varga of Kalispell was eighth (753, 38.3), ninth was Travis Banyai of Kalispell (710, 37.06) and Scott Bombard of Missoula was 10th (730, 35.72).

Julie Perkins of Kalispell own the ladies category with 302 lake trout entries, Connie Jones of Kalispell was second with 74, Nicole Peters of Missoula came in third with 51, Lisa Cloo of Clinton was fourth with 39 and Laurie Kreis of Huson was fifth with 36.

In the 70 and over category, Jack Kirkland was first with 557 lake trout entries, Larry Ashwell of Missoula was second with 416.

Matt Guckenberg, Jr. of Kalispell was first among anglers age 13-17 with 269 fish, Josey McIlhargey, Jr. of Kalispell was second with 36, Abby Hodgson of Kalispell was third with 26, Colton Spacht of Culbertson was fourth with 13, and Bryce Harvey of Kalispell was fifth with 10 entries.

Brodie Smith of Kalispell won the 12 and under category with 211 entries. In second place was Wyatt Best of Florence with 7. There was a three-way tie for third place as Tripp Bick of Arlee, Henry Phan of Kalispell and Bridgett Reed of Kalispell had five entries each.

The Spirit of the Event award was given to Jason and Scott Mahlen. The Mahlen family lost Scott during the event due to illness. His pole was in the boat with Jason the next day. There were $100 fish and a $200 tagged fish brought in at the end of that day of fishing.
