August 26, 2021

All systems are go for fall sports.

The fall high school prep sports schedules all begin this week with a busy first week of action in football, volleyball and cross country.

In football, the only Sanders County team that will open any season at home this week will be the Plains Horsemen, who will host the newly reminted Superior Bobcats. The Bobcats are back as a one-school entity after breaking with the Alberton cooperative the schools were recently locked into, with the team then being called the Clark Fork Mountain Cats.

The game, which kicks off at 7 p.m., will mark the Plains coaching debut for Ryan Hart, who was recently hired to coach the Horsemen grid team.

Fresh off a run to the 8-Man State playoff quarterfinals last fall, coach Jared Koskela and his Thompson Falls Blue Hawks are off to Charlo Friday to face the Vikings.

Both of Sanders County’s 6-Man teams, which each also advanced to the State playoffs last year, open play on the road this week. Coach Jim Lawson and his Hot Springs Savage Heat travel to Valier Friday evening and coach Bart Haflich and his Noxon Red Devils trek to Power-Dutton-Brady for a day game Saturday.

County volleyball teams will hit the court for tournament play this weekend to open the season.

Coach Sandra Kazmierczak and the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks will play in the Choteau Classic Thursday through Saturday, coach Jesse Butcher and the Plains Trotters and coach Dana Grupenhoff and the Noxon Red Devils will play in the Mission Tournament Saturday, and coach Alisha Pablo and her Hot Springs Savage Heat will participate in the Drummond Tournament Saturday.

With the county back up to three cross country programs (Plains will again have a team with Jesse Jermyn coaching), all three teams will hit the ground running this week.

Coach Sarah Naegeli and her Blue Hawk harriers, and Jermyn and his Plains runners will compete in the Deer Lodge Invitational Saturday to open the season.

Coached by Bethany White, the Hot Springs Savage Heat have two cross country meets scheduled this week, the Libby Invitational Friday and the Deer Lodge meet Saturday.
