Modern Homesteader

A way of life

September 9, 2021

I covered some of the 4-H at the fair this past weekend and while I normally like to meander through the stalls picking out all the different animals I want to take home, this year I had to dive into some research and find out what actually goes into everything the 4-H kids do.

I spoke with several 4-H members during my time at the fair and I received answers all similar to one another. Everyone was happy to be back after the uncertainty of last year.

One thing I didn’t realize was that this is a way of life for these kids, and without it, life for them just feels off.

To raise and care for an animal and then to see it auctioned off at the market stock sale, well that was something that was very hard for me to wrap my head around. But like I said, it’s a way of life for them.

While they strive to bring in the highest bidder, I commend them for this way of life. I still have much to learn about this homesteading journey I am on.

While I will still meander throughout the stalls every year, wishing I could bring all the chickens, goats and pigs home with me, I will also appreciate all those kids and their hard work and passion they put into this life.
