TEAMWORK - Seniors Avery Burgess (left) and Natalie Roberts, both new to the Hawk squad this year, go up for a block again Loyola's Isalei Bates during action last Thursday in Thompson Falls.

After a hard-fought victory last Thursday by the Thompson Falls Lady Hawks, the Loyola Sacred Heart Breakers find their own hearts broken. The first set went to the Heart Breakers in a long, close 32-30 battle. The Lady Hawks came back to win three straight though, besting Loyola 25-13, 25-21 and 25-20.

The Hawks were coming off a loss in Florence earlier in the week, where the Falcons won the match in three straight, 27-25, 25-19 and 25-21. The Lady Hawks were in high spirits Thursday though.

Junior Hawk Cheyla Irvine scored an impressive 31 aces against Loyola. Senior Elli Pardee and junior Avery Burgess racked up over a dozen kills each in that matchup. Pardee also had 45 blocks, 10 digs and seven aces, while Burgess had 25 blocks and five digs. Abby Lane and Natalie Roberts garnered seven kills each against the Heart Breakers and Danni Jo VanHuss served four aces.

HAWK SENIOR Elli Pardee spike the ball against Loyola's Isalei bates and Isabelle Berry during Thursday's match in Thompson Falls. The Blue Hawks travel to Deer Lodge and Anaconda this Saturday.

"I think we are taking the steps and getting there," Pardee said after the Loyola game. She explained that they have several new members and lost several good seniors last year. Pardee said the team is working to overcome a new equation of players and they are starting to find their rhythm.

According to coach Sandra Kazmierczak, the team is also playing without senior Scarlette Schwindt, who is recovering from an injury. However, the coach is optimistic, though they have played only one team in their conference. "Every day we work hard and it feels like they are having a good time with it," said Kazmierczak.

The Lady Hawks will play two matches this coming Saturday on the road, playing at Deer Lodge beginning at 11:30 a.m. and at Anaconda at 5:30 p.m.
