Decisions affected town

September 16, 2021

Saw an old friend the other day. “How are you Earl – you look a little down?” Well, he said, look to the north of town, Dave. They could have stopped that in an hour, but someone decided that it needed to be burned.

They say the hills were too rugged to put it out. They were short on equipment. One hour with a helicopter was all it needed. Look around the whole area — it is steep and hard to climb. A helicopter could have put a crew in to mop it up. There isn’t a mountain that I haven’t been up at least one time. They came to burn it up, those educated fellows.

You and I will have to look at that the rest of our lives. The roads will be built where there were none. The timber has very little value, now the sun will make it unusable. But, the educated fellows decided to burn it. Just think, we get to look at that for the rest of our lives.

They say it will be better in a few years. Look up Thompson River where the old fire was. All the dead trees have fallen. You can’t get ten feet off the road, nothing but weeds, no animal in sight.

I’ve seen more bear in the last three weeks than in the last four years – they will be in everyone’s garbage because there is no food. What will the elk and deer do until the food returns? What will they do this winter? The sheep are usually out by the mouth of Thompson River – where will they be this winter? In the highway looking for salt.

Do you know what 40,000 acres equals? 50 square miles. We are trying to get deer and elk to come back from wolf kills.

Get ready people – they will be in town because some educated fellows had a better idea.

You people that walk your dogs – bears like them. It will be the bear’s fault – no, it will be the educated fellows that made the decision to keep going with the fire. We will look at that until we die, Dave.

Don’t get me wrong. I don’t blame the firefighters. They were only following orders from the head people, the educated ones who thought burning it up was better.

With a tear in his eye, he said, “Dave, we will have to look at that until the day we die.”

Respectfully,

Dave Falk,

Thompson Falls
