The Blue Hawk boys came home from the Tip-Off Tournament in Anaconda with a win and a loss, narrowly losing to Stillwater Christian 50-46 on Friday and beating Choteau 55-46 on Saturday. “It was a great weekend for the boys,” Coach Jake Mickelson said of the Hawks, who are now 2-1 for the season.

The Hawks were tied with Stillwater Christian after two quarters as both teams went into halftime with 24 points. Stillwater outscored the Hawks 16-12 in the third to take the lead and maintained that through the fourth quarter. “I was impressed with our defensive effort and the intensity against Stillwater,” Mickelson said. “We are improving a ton.”

Jesse Claridge led the Hawks against Stillwater with 21 points and 10 rebounds, Nathan Schraeder had six points, nine assists and four rebounds, Braxton Dorscher, Bryson LeCoure and Breck Ferris five points each and Adam Childers and Ben Cooper two points apiece.

Mickelson was pleasantly surprised with everyone contributing against Stillwater. “Stillwater shoots the ball well, they are big and physical,” he noted. “We did a good job. Stillwater had to work for everything they got.” He said the Hawks are playing solid, fundamental defense, holding teams to the 40-50 point range and not getting into foul trouble. “Each week we try to get a little better.”

Offensively, Mickelson said the Hawks are “still trying to find their sea legs, but I’m not too concerned about that. The guys have the right attitudes.”

It was all Hawks against Choteau. Schraeder led with 15 points, 11 assists and five rebounds, Childers had 11 points, Claridge added 10 points, seven rebounds and four assists, Dorscher seven points, Cooper six and Ferris and LeCoure three each.

This week, the Hawks will host Libby on Thursday and travel to Plains on Friday. After not playing Plains last year, Mickelson and the Hawks are looking forward to the Plains matchup. “It’s always fun to go to Plains and play in that environment,” Mickelson said.
