Horsemen improving as season continues
December 23, 2021
The Plains Horsemen are a young basketball team, but they are showing lots of improvement and playing with enthusiasm. The Horsemen held two contests at home last week, welcoming Thompson Falls on Friday and Troy on Saturday. Though Plains lost both matchups, the team continues to play hard.
"The kids didn't quit. They kept fighting the whole game," Plains Coach Tyrel Allen said of the game against Thompson Falls, which the Blue Hawks won 54-35. "They were super excited." The game against Troy was closer, with the Horsemen losing by just nine. Allen said turnovers plagued the Horsemen in the second half against Troy.
Allen is proud of the improvement he's seeing defensively from his team. He said they are learning to take charges and not just let players go by to the basket. The Horsemen took three charges against Troy and one against Thompson Falls. "They are starting to put their bodies on the line a little," Allen said. The team also is improving with defensive rebounds. "We're a short team but we have started improving footwork when the shot goes up and we go in for rebounds."
Allen looks for his team to continue improving through the season as they get closer to tournament time. During the holiday break, Allen said they will be working on transition defense and pushing the tempo offensively. Plains was set to host Bigfork Tuesday. Results will be printed in next week's Ledger.
