January 27, 2022

The Savage Heat boys and girls basketball teams were in sync last week. The teams traveled to St. Regis on Tuesday, where both came up short against the Tigers. But the Savage Heat hoopsters bounced back at home Thursday as they both beat Flathead Christian in Hot Springs.

The Hot Springs girls lost to St. Regis 60-49 on Tuesday, then beat Flathead Christian 50-45. Senior Katelyn Christensen led the Savage Heat in both games, with 22 and 24 points, respectively. The teams Thursday were tied at 14 after the first quarter, but Hot Springs held on the rest of the game for the win. Josie Uski added eight points to the Savage Heat win, Brooke Jackson six, Lauren Aldridge five, Erica Cannon three and Georgia Uski and Moira Lonergan scored two each.

The boys lost to St. Regis 58-50, then came home to beat Flathead Christian 56-41. “St. Regis handled us pretty good,” Savage Heat Coach Scott Fredrickson said, adding that his team made a comeback in the fourth quarter against St. Regis, but it ended up being too little too late for Hot Springs. The Savage Heat were down by just six points at halftime, but were outscored 20-4 in the third and were unable to recover, even though Hot Springs garnered 23 points in the fourth quarter. “We knew they’d be tough and they were,” the Hot Springs coach said. Fredrickson noted St. Regis hit four three-pointers in the first quarter and sank nine total in the game. In Hot Springs’ push in the fourth quarter, Garth Parker scored 10 points. He also led the team in scoring overall with 14 total points. Kyle Lawson added 12, Quincy Styles-DePoe 10, Nate Lawhead eight and Jack McAllister scored six points.

At home against Flathead Christian on Thursday was a different story for Hot Springs. “It was a good win and another consistent game,” Fredrickson said. The Savage Heat outscored their opponents in each quarter, leading by just two points after the first quarter and up by five points at the half. Lawhead led with 18 points against Flathead, 12 of those in the fourth quarter. Lawson had 11 points and six assists, and McAllister added eight points, nine assists and eight rebounds, along with seven steals. Parker scored eight points, Michael Marrinan six and Styles-DePoe two points.

This week, the Hot Springs boys played Plains on Tuesday evening, and are scheduled to travel to Superior Friday before hosting St. Regis on Saturday. Fredrickson said he was looking forward to good practices this week and getting another chance at St. Regis this weekend.
