Hawks ready for state

The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks have had a few days to rest after their second-place finish at the Western B Divisional touranment.

Now, the Hawks are hitting the road to Bozeman for their first state tournament appaearance in nearly 20 years.

Thompson Falls will open the MHSA Class B Girls tournament agianst Harlem on Thursday. The teams meet at the Brick breeden Fiedlhouse on the campus of Montana State University, with the game set to tip off at 5 p.m. Harlem is the No. 2 seed out of the North and took second place behind Malta.

If the Blue Hawks win Thursday, they will move on to the semifinal round and play the winner of the Colstrip-Glasgow matchup. The semifinal game would take place Friday at 5 p.m. Should the Hawks lose, they will play the loser of that North-South game at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Other teams making the trip to state in Bozeman include Bigfork, who beat the Hawks for the No. 1 seed in the western dvisional, and Columbus and Jefferson from the south.

The last time the Lady Hawks advanced to a state tournament was 2003. The Hawks won the divisional tournament that year in Hamilton. The state tournament also was held in Hamilton.

Current assistant coach Sandra Kazmierczak's daughter Victoria was a senior. Other Hawks that year included Chandra Rutzke, Amanda Grazier, Chelsey Sterling, Ashley Mosher, Dacey Jedlicka, Amber Grazier, Stephanie Bortz, Rachel Fairbank, Paige Taylor and Katie Holleran. Coach Courtney Burky was also assisted by Karla Padden.

Back in 2003, it was the first time in Thompson Falls history that the team had ever won 20 games in a season. The Hawks won one of their three games at the state tournament.

As the Lady Hawks head back to the state touranment this year, they know they are a part of town history. Coach Chadd Laws and his team go into the state tournament with a 16-8 record, a fourth-place finish at district and a second-place finish at divisional.

The community of Thompson Falls let their blue and gold shine in support of the team this week. Students painted spirited messages on many local businsses. The Thompson Falls Pep band will also make the trip to Bozeman Thursday to help cheer on the team.
