The Blue Hawks softball team beat Troy 10-0 last Thursday. Cheyla Irvine pitched the whole game, shutting out the Trojans. On offense, five Blue Hawks batted .500 or better and junior Liv McCormick led the team with three runs.

On Sunday, the Hawks beat Bonners Ferry 18-8 behind strong batting. McCormick and sophomore Blakely Lakko each had three RBIs. The Hawks are 4-1 on the season, with their sole loss to Plains. Their next home game is against Powell County on Saturday, April 16.

HAWKS PERFORM WELL IN LIBBY

The Thompson Falls thinclads performed well in Libby on Friday. “We were extremely impressed with our athletes’ performances and improvements. Our kids went head to head with Bigfork, Browning, Eureka, Troy and Libby athletes,” Coach Trenna Ferris said. “Eight of our men placed in the top six varsity finishes in multiple events. Our men’s JV really competed, taking a second place team finish in the JV level. The women’s team competed hard as well. Five athletes placed in multiple events.” Notable performers were Breck Ferris, who finished third in the 100 with a time of 11.6 seconds, ran in the second place long relay team along with Kein Kauffman, Ryan Bucher and William Hyatt with a time of 3 minutes 48.46 seconds, took second place in the high jump with a jump of 5 feet 8 inches and second place in the long jump at 19 feet 7 inches. Ryan Bucher placed second in the 200 with a time of 24.42 seconds. William Hyatt placed second in the 1,600 with a time of 4 minutes, 50 seconds, and first in the 3,200 with a time of 10 minutes 16.6 seconds, 34 seconds faster than the second-place finisher. Chesney Lowe took second in the women’s 200 with a time of 30.66 seconds, tied for second in the pole vault with a jump of 7 feet, 6 inches, took third in javelin with a toss of 99 feet, 3 inches, and third in triple jump with a jump of 30 feet, 9.25 inches. Hattie Neesvig won the triple jump with a jump of 31 feet, 5 inches, and took third in the high jump with a jump of 4 feet, 6 inches.

The Blue Hawks host their next meet on Thursday, April 14, starting at 11 am.

GOLFERS BATTLE WEATHER IN EUREKA

The golf team braved inclement weather in Eureka last Thursday. “The kids competed in wind, sun, snow and that pretty much repeated all day with an average high of 38 to 41 degrees. The course was challenging. The holes are placed quite a distance apart, so [the golfers] walked many miles,” said Coach Doree Thilmony. “I was going to walk [the course] and the administrator just looked at me and laughed. The meet was held at the Wilderness Club Resort, the site of a five-star hotel and, according to their website, the number one ranked golf course in Montana. Thilmony emphasized how lucky the team was to play at a course which normally charges $89 per round. “We thank Eureka for putting this tournament together and providing this opportunity for the kids to golf this course where maybe in their personal time they would not have this opportunity.”
