The first annual shoe drive, held by the Thompson Falls Woman’s Club (TFWC), got off on the right foot. The fundraiser, which started in February, helped raise funds for general operations in the club and helped keep unnecessary waste out of the landfill.

Leslie Brant, project organizer of the project, wanted a fundraiser that would bring the community together without having to ask them to reach into their pocket books. GotSneakers, the company who brings gently used athletic shoes to those around the world who need them, also recycles the shoes that can no longer be worn. Brant knew she was in the right place when she found this fundraising opportunity.

“We collected 221 pairs of shoes,” she said. “Environmentally, we did really well.” Brant says the shoes collected and recycled stopped 7,120 pounds of displaced carbon dioxide from entering the atmosphere. The shoes that stayed out of the landfill also helped keep 537,166 gallons of water safe from ground contamination.

“We really appreciate the businesses for letting us collect shoes at their establishments,” Brant said. “We are very happy with the outcome and we want to thank everyone who donated.” The collection barrels at Whitefish Credit Union, Trout Creek Senior Center, Thompson Falls Senior Center, Rimrock, True Value Hardware, Mangy Moose, Ace Hardware and Harvest Foods were all full of shoes when volunteers went to collect them.

TFWC will start the project again in the fall. Gently used athletic shoes can be donated at the TFWC yard sale in the Black Bear ballroom, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. on June 17.
