Candidates set for races

Sanders County Elections staff on Monday counted an additional 43 provisional ballots for the primary election, but the ballots did not change the outcome of any of the local races.

In the race for Sanders County Sheriff, Roy Scott and Shawn Fielders will advance to the November general election. Scott won the primary with 1,224 votes and Fielders came in second with 1,052 votes. Third place went to Corey Wheeldon with 1,024, just 28 votes behind Fielders. Election Administrator Nichol Scribner said that the margin is outside the parameters that would require a recount. For a recount to be conducted, the number of votes has to be within .25%. In the race for sheriff’s candidates, Wheeldon came in .5747% behind Fielders.

Scribner stated that five of the provisional ballots were rejected because voters failed to present identification by 5 p.m. last Wednesday or they had already voted their absentee ballot. Another provisional ballot was rejected because the person was not registered to vote in Sanders County.

The provisional ballots also did not make a difference for Sanders County Commissioner candidates. In District 2, John Holland and Mahlon Lee will advance to the general election. In District 1, Adam Bache and Dan Rowan will face off in November.

Of the 9,795 registered voters in Sanders County, 4,872 voted in the primary election. The general election will be Tuesday, November 8. Voters can use the state’s My Voter Page to verify mailing information and check to see if they are registered as an absentee voter. The website, at https://app.mt.gov/voterinfo, allows voters to track their ballot and also see sample ballots.
