Tom Hoiland lives in Washington, but every August he comes to Trout Creek for one of his favorite traditions, the Huckleberry Run For Fun. This year the run was special for Hoiland, who is 90 years old. He was surprised with a small reunion of family members who walked the 5K with him.

"This won't go on forever," Hoiland said last week as he was preparing to head to Trout Creek from Connell, Washington. He said he'll keep coming back as long as he can, but doesn't know when it will be his last run. This year he expected to have his daughters with him, but he was surprised to see grandkids and great-grandkids there, too. "Every year someone joins me in the run," he said.

Hoiland had the biggest fan club as he crossed the finish line wearing a 2003 Run For Fun hat. He said he started doing the Huckleberry run in 1979, and only missed 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.

Hoiland said when he reached the age of about 75, he started winning his age group each year. "Now you don't have to outrun them, you just have to outlive them," he joked. He trained this year by walking five kilometers twice a week for a month prior to last weekend's festival.

The pancake breakfast is one of Hoiland's favorite parts of the festival, and he and his family were lined up before the doors opened at the fire hall at 7 a.m.

Hoiland has family in Trout Creek, so that is how his tradition of never missing a Run For Fun started.

Thompson Falls alum Justin Morgan, who now competes for Montana Tech in Butte, was the first to cross the finish line Saturday morning. He ran the 5K before heading back to college that same day. Morgan finished in 16 minutes, 7 seconds, just ahead of Finneas Colescott in 16:29. Morgan said they traded the lead for the first mile and a half before he pulled ahead for the second half of the run.Also in the run this year was the Hellgate High School cross country team from Missoula. The team had 20 people enter the run. Team members said they normally do a retreat before the school year starts and decided to come to Trout Creek this year.
