Hawks extend win streak as tournament nears

Thompson Falls hosted the Plains Trotters last Tuesday, winning in three straight sets, 25-8, 25-16, 25-13. Senior Natalie Roberts led the charge against the Trotters, serving up seven aces for the Hawks and smashing 12 kills. Avery Burgess led the team in set assists with 17, Cheyla Irvine had eight digs and Ellie Baxter led the team in blocks with three.

The Hawks then traveled to Mission on Thursday, bringing home another three-set win, 25-14, 25-17, 25-13. Burgess led against the Bulldogs with 12 kills, 17 set assists and seven digs, while Roberts added five aces and Baxter again led the team with three blocks.

The Plains Trotters also traveled to Mission last week, falling in three sets Saturday. The Bulldogs beat Plains 25-22, 25-19, 25-18. The Trotters were set to host Bigfork Tuesday in their final game of the regular season. Results of that match were not available at press time.

Thompson Falls entered their last week of play on a high note as they welcomed Troy on Monday for the Blue Hawk senior night. Thompson Falls kept their three-set streak going with a win over the Trojans, 25-11, 25-13, 25-6.

Troy had the upper hand at the start of all three sets as the Hawks found their groove. In the first set, Thompson Falls tied it at five each before they took the lead. In the second, Troy and Thompson were tied at six points apiece. Baxter served seven points in a row to boost the Hawks, who widened their lead for the eventual win. In the third set, Troy again started out 2-1 over the Hawks, who then rallied to seal the win. Baxter led the team in set assists and aces against Troy, with 17 and seven, respectively. Avery Burgess slammed an impressive 12 kills at the Trojans, Ceyla Irvine led with eight digs, and Burgess and Gabby Hannum each had one block.

The last regular season of the game for Thompson Falls is Saturday as they travel to Bigfork. The varsity match begins at 6 p.m. Saturday. Bigfork is undefeated this season and beat the Hawks in four sets earlier this season. Thompson Falls will be looking for redemption as they travel to Bigfork.

Plains now looks forward to the District 7B tournament, which will be October 28-29 in Thompson Falls.
