City sewer project to continue in spring

November 17, 2022

Work on the Thompson Falls wastewater project has ceased for the winter. Razz Construction has connected 186 of the more than 300 properties in phases 1 and 2 of the project to the community sewer system, Mayor Mark Sheets said at Monday’s City Council meeting.

The contract with Razz Construction for phases 1 and 2 was up October 13. However, the company has told the city that it will take 10-15 more weeks to finish the project. Phases 1 and 2 includes hooking up to the city sewer properties north of the railroad tracks from the west end of Thompson Falls to Grove Street. City Clerk Chelsea Peterson said at last month’s meeting that Razz Construction plans to pick up in the spring, with the project finishing possibly in May.

The city this month must start paying back loans received for the sewer project. With 154 properties not hooked up to the sewer in the first phases of the project, the city will not have the funds to pay for the loans. Each sewer hookup costs $58.80 per month, and the city has come to an agreement with Razz Construction in which the contractor will pay the difference in the monthly hookup fees (more than $9,000) each month until phases 1 and 2 are complete. Mayor Mark Sheets has sent a letter to Razz Construction requesting that they pay the difference for the properties not hooked up to the sewer system by the deadline. Sheets on Monday said Razz is disputing the number of days in the contract because of the prominence of rocks on the properties that had to be broken to complete the project.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the council voted to move forward with a Montana Main Street grant application for a community wayfinding sign planning grant. Kayla Mosher with Kaniksu Land Trust will act as the administrator for the grant, which if awarded would provide funds to plan a signage project for the city. Mosher said the city would gather public input for the sign project, which would help residents and tourists locate businesses, recreation opportunities and other landmarks.

The next city council meeting will be Monday, December 12, at 6 p.m.
