Trotter softball opens season in Polson

March 30, 2023

The Trotters traveled to Polson last weekend to launch their season softball journey. Their first game on the Larry Smith Field was against Columbia Falls. “We got our first game jitters out of the way in Polson,” said Coach Kati Mitchell. Plains held the lead 1-0 until the third inning. Due to a time limit the Trotters played four innings, falling to the Columbia Falls Wildcats, 13-2.

“Senior Piper Bergstrom was our starting pitcher and did very well,” said Mitchell. Aubree Butcher, an eighth grader on the team, was the relief pitcher. Senior Carlie Wagoner made it home in the first inning to score the first run and Senior Izzy Crabb ran the bases to score in the fourth and final inning.

The Trotters then took on the Polson Pirates, losing 15-0 in four innings. Sophomore Maddy Blood was the starting pitcher, firing three strike-outs. Wagoner was the relief pitcher in the third inning and Butcher was the star batter who made the one hit of the game.

“We did very well, everyone was swinging in the batter's box and doing all the defense training we have been practicing the last two weeks,” said Mitchell, adding that, “Polson and Columbia Falls have great athletes; we love coming to this tournament every year to see another level of play we won’t see during the season."
