Our Viewpoint: Find reasons to celebrate

January 11, 2024

We're journalists, so we're curious. When we heard about the National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day event at Plains School, my reporter asked if I knew the history of the day. I didn't, so I started doing some research.

It's a fantastic idea to honor law enforcement with a day and show them how much they are appreciated. It takes a special person to put your life on the line, not to mention the hours law enforcement works and the daily situations they encounter.

So when I was doing my research, I stumbled upon the website NationalDayCalendar.com. It is fascinating. There are days for everything. Just looking at January, here are some of the highlights:

Jan. 1: National Bloody Mary Day, National Hangover Day and, oh right, New Year's Day.

Jan. 3: National Drinking Straw Day.

Jan. 10: National Houseplant Appreciation Day.

Jan. 19: National Popcorn Day.

Jan. 21: Squirrel Appreciation Day.

Jan. 24: Beer Can Appreciation Day.

Some of these seem quite ridiculous, and the website even credits itself with making up some of these holidays. The idea, though, is to find something each day that is worth celebrating. On those stressful days at work, or during the dark days of winter, it can be hard to find the positive.

Go to the website and see what your birthday is. My birthday (April 11) is National Pet Day, National Eight Track Tape Day, National Living Donor Day, National Submarine Day and National Cheese Fondue Day. It's a big day and this gives me even more to celebrate this year!

I appreciate local schools and organizations recognizing those in service. The events surrounding Veterans Day, Memorial Day and the holidays in our county make me very proud to be a part of this community.

Remember to celebrate those in service on random days throughout the year. Also remember to take time to celebrate the random things in life. I look forward to seeing you all on National Kazoo Day (Jan. 28)!
