Saturday night at the Thompson Falls High School gymnasium was a little like Groundhog Day. The Hawks welcomed the Eureka Lions basketball teams, and the night was nearly a repeat of when the Hawks traveled to Eureka just a couple weeks ago.
While the Blue Hawk boys fell to the Lions 64-36, the Lady Hawks finished the evening off with a 60-50 overtime win.
The Lady Hawks handily led the Lions through the first three quarters, up 15-5 after the first and 31-15 at halftime. As the third quarter started, both teams upped their game and were aggressive with the ball. Eureka got within eight points as the third quarter ended 38-26 and the teams sprang into action on the court.
Eureka narrowed the Thompson lead to just five points early in the fourth quarter, and with just three minutes left, Eureka took the lead 44-43. Hawk Aubrey Baxter tied the game with a free throw, and then the teams were once again tied at 46 points apiece. Addi Pardee sank a 3-pointer for the Hawks, which the Lions answered with their own long score. With less than a minute left and the Hawks down 49-50, Pardee got fouled by Eureka and put a free throw in to tie the game with just 33 second left in regular play.
The overtime period was just what the Hawks needed to regain control of the game. Baxter scored at the start of the four minutes. With less than two minutes left, the Hawks scored eight points, first with sophomore Gabi Hannum scoring off a steal, drawing a foul and putting one free throw in to make the score 55-50 Hawks. Eureka fouled Pardee again and she put two more through the net. Hannum scored the final two points on a layup and the Hawks finished overtime 60-50.
The Thompson Falls and Eureka boys had a physical game from the start. The teams were tied at 8 before Eureka pulled ahead to 14-8 at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks gained some momentum in the second but trailed 27-17 at halftime as Eureka was hard to stop from beyond the 3-point line. Eureka kept up their strong offensive push in the third quarter, hitting a 3-point shot to make the score 48-28 at the end of the 8 minutes. In the final quarter, the Hawks made their own string of 3-pointers but were unable to overtake the Lions, finishing 64-36.
Junior Bryson Leoure led the Hawks with 15 points, and grabbed seven rebounds, senior Braxton Dorscher scored 7 points and had three rebounds, Nick Tessier had five points, and Theo Nygaard, Sam Burgess and Cael Thilimony scored three each. The Hawks went 7-for-24 in 3-point shots, including three from LeCoure and one each from Dorscher, Tessier, Burgess and Nygaard.
The Hawks are entering their final week of the regular season, traveling to Troy on Thursday and welcoming Superior on Saturday for senior night.
