County offers help for tax payers

In efforts to help tax payers, Sanders County has developed a payment plan for delinquent mobile home and personal property tax payers. In the next few weeks, tax payers with any outstanding taxes over one year old will receive a Letter of Delinquency in the mail.

Treasurer Nichol Scribner said that as soon as the delinquency letter is received, there will be a 30-day period for tax payers to set up a payment plan with her. If a payment plan is not developed, a Writ of Execution will be served, and the collection process will begin.

“Sanders County has an epidemic of delinquent mobile home and property taxes,” Scribner said. “We are working hard to get a handle on these outstanding bills and get things cleaned up. As part of this process, I want to reach out to mobile home and personal property tax payers to contact me as soon as possible to get payment plans in place.”

To make things easier for fixed and low-income individuals, as well as veterans, Scribner said there are options available to make payments manageable. “Even if you do not fall into one of these categories, I will work with you on payment plans,” said Scribner.

If you purchased a mobile home that did not have updated tax payments on it, that liability stays with the mobile home and is the responsibility of the current owner. “Therefore, if you purchased a mobile from someone and did not verify that the taxes were paid in full,” shared Scribner, “that debt becomes yours.” She highly recommends purchasers contact the Sanders County Treasurer’s Office to verify if taxes are paid, especially on mobile homes older than 1977, to deflect any tax liability problems.

“I am happy to help fill out paperwork,” commented Scribner. “My preference is to take care of these prior to taking additional steps with law enforcement to collect.”

Scribner can be reached at 827-6922 to discuss payment plans, ask questions or to discuss whether a tax bill was received in error. She also asked that any removed or destroyed mobile homes that were assessed a tax bill be reported to her immediately.
