Savage Heat netters get it right, win

October 10, 2019

Western Montana’s newspaper had it wrong; thankfully, the Hot Springs Savage Heat girls made it right.

The Heat’s Saturday night match with Darby was reported as a straight-set loss to the visiting Tigers when it was actually a straight-set win with the Spa City heroines pounding out a 25-12, 25-11, 25-21 victory.

“It was actually my fault, I entered the score wrong,” coach Alisha Pablo explained. “I got it corrected on the 406sports site but not in time for the newspaper, but we actually won the match.”

Katelyn Christensen was again a big reason why the Heat enjoyed net success. The sophomore hitter led Hot Springs at the net with 11 kills and four service aces, besides adding a pair of stuff-blocks.

Lily Winn added seven kills and two blocks, Sage Jackson hit nine digs and Savannah Roosma seven, and Sydney Jackson choreographed the Heat attack with 18 set assists. Pablo said McKennzie Cannon also made vital contributions to the effort.

“Katelyn had another big night for us against Darby,” Pablo said, “she really played the net well, hit some great shots.

“McKennzie served really well and Savannah made some great passes,” she added. “And Sydney and Sage are our work-horses, they cover the court so well and give our other girls the opportunity to make shots, they really don’t get enough credit for all they do.”

Libby Schlapman (three kills, two blocks), Annie Rennaker (four assists), Ashley Bishop (five aces) and Madison Conner (seven digs) led Darby.

In other action last week, the Heat also defeated Valley Christian 25-13, 26-24, 25-19 in Missoula Oct. 1.

Cannon collected a team-high 11 kills and three blocks in that match, Lily Winn crushed seven kills and eight aces, Sage Jackson had seven aces and nine digs, and sister Sydney nine more digs and 16 set assists.

Lexi Baer had six kills and Fylena Rahn eight assists for Valley.

Largely on the non-conference trail up until now, the Heat have a flurry of District 14C matches on tap. The Heat were to have hosted Noxon Tuesday, will visit Charlo Friday and Plains next Tuesday.

“We have a very big week coming up,” Pablo said. “We are excited to play some conference opponents as we haven’t seen them since the beginning of the season, and feel our district is much more competitive.”
