Our Viewpoint

Looking back at another decade

January 2, 2020

With the new year comes new resolutions and a fresh start. When we saw our cartoon this week (right), however, it hit us — the 2010s are gone. How did that happen?

As the old saying goes, hindsight is always 20/20. If we could have known then what we know now, would we do anything different? A decade is a long time on which to reflect. Even looking back over 2019 and remembering everything that happened is a stretch. Are there things we wish had gone differently or decisions we would have pondered more now that we are another 10 years down the road? Sure. But we've always believed in learning from the past and living smarter.

One good thing about being in the 20s is we know what to call it. After Y2K, there was the identity crisis and we didn't know whether to call it the "two-thousands" or the "double ohs." Even the twenty-teens were rough. Now, we're just back to being in the 20s.

The 2010s was a decade of awareness. We are all now much more connected than 10 years ago. It was the decade of Facebook and Snapchat and #MeToo and realizing that privacy as we know it is gone.

However, it was also the decade when we first saw the iPad, when same-sex marriage became legal and when we learned what a selfie was and the Kardashians taught us how to take the perfect one — OK, maybe that last one isn't worth remembering.

We welcome the 2020s with open arms and an open mind. We hope that this is the decade of kindness. Of everyone living smarter. We can't wait to look back on the world in 2030 and see all that has been accomplished. Happy New Year!
