Election season just ahead

As we approach a new year, Montana Secretary of State has released dates and deadlines for 2018 election processes.

The 2018 Primary and General Election dates are set as follows:

January 11 will be the first day for candidates to file for office.

March 12 is the deadline for candidates to file for office and/or withdraw primary election candidacy.

April 27 write-in candidates must file Declaration of Intent for the primary election.

May 7 is the closing date for regular voter registration; all forms must be postmarked by this date.

June 5 will host the primary election.

October 1 is the deadline for write-in candidates to file Declaration of Intent for the general election.

November 6 the General Election will take place.

County Commissioner #1, currently held by Carol Brooker, will be open for election this year. Recent collaboration of the Clerk and Recorder/Treasurer and Sheriff/Coroner positions will both be accepting candidates for the 2018 election. County Attorney and Public Administrator and Justice of the Peace will also be open for this year’s election.

In 2018, Special Purpose District Election dates to remember are as follows:

February 12, candidate filing closes, and is also the date for candidates to withdraw.

March 5, all write-in candidates must file a Declaration of Intent.

April 9 all regular voters must have registered by 5 p.m.

May 8 is Special Purpose District Election.

Fire district positions up for election include Dixon Rural Fire District, one, three-year position and one, one-year position. Hot Springs Fire District has two, three-year positions. Plains/Paradise will fill one, three-year slot. Thompson Falls has a vacancy for a single three-year position. Trout Creek Rural Fire will look to fill a three-year position. Noxon and Heron both request candidates to fill each of their three-year term positions.

Trout Creek Park District also has a single two-year position up this election.

Eastern Sanders Count Hospital District will look for candidates to fill two, three-year positions. Noxon Heron Public Hospital District has one, three-year position up for election.

Water and Sewer Districts at Plains, Paradise and Woodside will ask for candidates to fill two, four-year positions at each location. Noxon Water and Sewer has three, four-year positions to be filled this election year.

School elections calendar dates and deadlines for 2018 are set.

From now until March 29, all school trustee candidates must file for election in order to appear on ballot, and must be a registered voter.

April 5 will be the deadline for write-in candidates wanting consideration for a school board trustee position. This date also serves as deadline for trustee candidates wishing to withdraw from the election.

May 8, Election Day

School Board Trustee candidates are being accepted for two, three-year term positions at Hot Springs District #14J.

Plains Public School District #1 has two trustee vacancies that are both three-year positions.

Thompson Falls District will hold elections for two positions that are both for three-year terms.

Noxon School District has vacancies for one, three-year position, one, one-year term position (Noxon Trustee), and one, one-year Trout Creek Trustee vacancy.
