Stand up for democracy

January 7, 2021

This morning I was disappointed to hear of Sen. Daines’ intent to challenge the presidential election’s outcome by voting to reject state-certified electors from selected states. A few weeks ago, Trump’s then-Attorney General William Barr said there was no evidence of even slightly significant fraud and the election ran smoothly.

Fifty years ago, I fought as a sergeant in an airborne unit at Dak To, Vietnam, to preserve our essential democratic obligations, including the right to vote and to have those votes realized as an expression of freedom. I do not understand why many House Republicans and several Senate Republicans would object to state-certified electors, especially as several recounts and more than 50 rejected court challenges, including two Supreme Court rejections, are on record. Where is the evidence?

Now that it’s your turn to stand for democracy, where is your courage? Where is your honor? If thousands of combat veterans could move forward under enemy fire, could you not stand up for democracy with words?

Charles W. Bickenheuser,

Plains
