The Cancer Network of Sanders County (CNSC) kicked off their 2021 season with a special Mother’s Day event titled, "Music for Moms," Friday at the Rex Community Theater in Thompson Falls. According to Kathy Miller, CNSC treasurer, the inaugural event of the season was a success. “It’s our first year back after the coronavirus,” Miller said. “I think people are still a little concerned, but this is a good turnout.” Miller says for the last six years, a Mother’s Day concert has been the kickoff event. “People are out and we want them to enjoy themselves,” she said. “We can kick off our fundraiser and kick corona out.”

The event was free, but CNSC collected donations at the door. With performers ranging from ages 8 to 89, around 60 attendees enjoyed an evening of music, poetry and a little bit of comedy. Artists included Dave and Deb Oliver who helped host the event, fiddler Bob Sink and a half a dozen other musical performances. The VonTraver family singers put together an act specifically for the event. During intermission, prizes from local businesses were given out.

While 2020 proved to be a significant setback for many nonprofits as they were forced to cancel events, CNSC was still able to provide help to those in the community. “It’s been a strange year, but Sanders County residents came through,” Miller said.

In 2020, the Cancer Network distributed 119 gifts of $900 each. In 2021, they have been able to distribute 29 gifts so far, all totaling to $26,100. During intermission, Miller told the audience the Cancer Network received an anonymous donor’s COVID-19 relief check for $1,200.

Friday’s donations totaled $868. “Given the fact people weren’t engaged last year, we did pretty good,” Miller said of the donation total. “People were very generous as always.”
