Trust our leaders

February 16, 2023

In the last couple of weeks, there have been two items voted on by county commissioners that were split votes. It’s not that unusual, but it’s still noticeable. Why? Because it’s a reflection of how our county is changing.

People in Sanders County were relatively similar when I was growing up. Most of my friends were born here. You had your friends not necessarily because you had the same interests, but you didn’t have a lot of choice. My senior year of high school, my best pal was a “program kid” (ironically, also named Annie) from California. I enjoyed her as a friend because she was someone different. She had different hobbies and came from a different background. I got to learn about the world outside of Sanders County.

Today’s Sanders County is much different than even when I moved back home in 2008. This is not to say that we were better off back then or we’re better off now. We just have new people and new ideas. Our county has had to adjust to changing political philosophies and changing social priorities.

I for one believe that no board or committee should make unanimous decisions 100% of the time. Even in a perfect world, people will have different opinions and place more weight on one matter or another.

I still believe that Sanders County at its core is filled with people who care about each other. I don’t agree with anyone 100% of the time, and neither should our leaders. However, our leaders were elected for a reason, by a majority of voters, and we need need to trust that they are going to make the right decisions for our county. — Annie Wooden
