February 8, 2024

It was a busy week for the Hot Springs basketball teams last week. The Savage Heat went back-to-back with Two Eagle River Wednesday and Thursday, with the girls getting two wins and the boys two losses. The Lady Savage Heat beat Two Eagle River 59-49 on Wednesday and 50-43 on Thursday, while the boys fell 44-54 on Wednesday and 53-65 on Thursday. The Savage Heat boys bounced back with a win on Saturday, though, beating Alberton 56-37 in Hot Springs. The girls did not play on Saturday as Alberton does not have a team.

In their win at home Wednesday, Hot Springs and Two Eagle River went point-for-point in the first and were tied at 11 apiece. But as the second quarter started, Hot Springs engaged their boosters and outscored the Eagles to take the lead 30-22 at halftime. That push was enough of an edge to push the Savage Heat to the home victory. Senior Lauryn Aldridge led the charge with 19 points, Kara Christensen had 13 and Brooke Jackson 10.

The Thursday rematch started to a different tune as Two Eagle River led out of the gate, up 11-7 in the first quarter. They kept their momentum and led by just two points going into halftime, 20-18. The Lady Savage Heat kept up with the Eagles and lessened the lead to just one point as the third quarter ended with Two Eagle up 34-33. In the fourth quarter, Hot Springs was on fire, scoring 17 points, taking the lead and sealing the 50-43 win.

In Wednesday’s matchup, the Savage Heat outscored the Eagles 15-12 in the first before Two Eagle River came back to lead 32-22 at halftime. Hot Springs put up a great effort and outscored the Eagles in the fourth quarter, but it wasn’t enough to get a win.

In Thursday’s rematch on the road, Two Eagle River led 31-26 at halftime before taking control in the third quarter and winning 65-53. Weston Slonaker led Hot Springs with 18 points, Quincy Styles DePoe had 10, Michael Marrinan 8, Elijah Campbell 7, Daniel Slonaker 6 and Ben Aldridge scored 4.

For the final week of regular season play, Hot Springs heads to Noxon on Thursday and will travel to Charlo on Saturday.
