Voters cast primary ballots

Sanders County voters headed to the polls on Tuesday to cast ballots in the 2024 primary election.

Voters decided against conducting a local government review. The ballot issue failed in the county, as well as in Thompson Falls, Plains and Hot Springs.

In the county, 2,369 people voted against the review, with 1,603 votes for. In Thompson Falls, there were 199 votes against the local review and 150 for. In Hot Springs, the measure failed with 69 votes against and 57 for, and in Plains, 191 people voted against the review and 96 for.

Several county officials are up for election this year, but only one race is contested. Candidates Cynthia Neste and Carl Marquardt will both advance to the November 5 general election.

Alisa Garcia of Thompson Falls is the only candidate on the ballot for the combined position of Clerk and Recorder, Treasurer and Superintendent of Schools. Up for re-election and the only candidates to file for their respective races are Commissioner Dan Rowan, County Coroner Greg Davis and County Attorney Megan Hansen.

Rep. Paul Fielder in House District 14 received 2,436 votes in the primary on Republican ballots and Colleen Hinds of Heron 726 votes on Democratic ballots.

In the primary race for State Senator in District 45, Republican Denley Loge received 171 votes in Sanders County while Annamarie White received 76.

In Senate District 46, Democratic candidate Jacinda Morigeau received the most votes in Sanders County with 37, compared with 14 for CB Pearson.

In Senate District 90, Jeff Stanfel received 110 votes in Sanders County, while Curtis Cochran received 79 and Steven Delisle 46.

Overall in the county, 3,465 Republican ballots were cast in Sanders County, as well as 855 Democratic, 19 Libertarian ballots and 12 Green Party ballots. Of the 4,451 total ballots counted Tuesday by the county election staff, 3,796 were absentee ballots.
