  • Hawks take 5th in Polson

    John Hamilton|Dec 7, 2017

Jase and Kaleb led the way, and the rest of the Hawks followed. Competing against a quality field of sqauds which included Class AA, A and B-C teams, the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks impressively wrestled down fifth place in team scoring at the Owen Invitational in Polson Friday and Saturday. Fresh off an all-state season of football for the Hawks, senior Jase Sorenson led the Thompson Falls contingent in Polson, winning the championship at 170 pounds. Fellow senior Kaleb Frank also did his part,...

  • Spa City girls split games in Tip-Off tourney

    John Hamilton|Dec 7, 2017

It’s game on in Hot Springs, and coach Richard Jackson and his young Savage Heat girls are obviously ready for some basketball. “It’s here, and we are off and running,” Jackson said of the hoop season after his girls split games in the Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown Friday and Saturday, “and we are looking forward to it. The attitudes are great and the girls are having fun, it should be a good season.” The Heat girls opened the season with a 56-34 win over Lincoln Friday and then fell 44-41 to Seeley-Swan Saturday in Frenchtown. Now 1-1 in no...

  • Hawk boys to trek to Three Forks

    John Hamilton|Dec 7, 2017

It does not mean quite as much as it has in the past, but the Libby Loggers defeated the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks 70-56 in Libby Saturday in the season opener for both boys teams. The reason the game between far northwestern Montana foes is not quite as important as it once was is the fact that Libby has moved back up to Class A this school year after several seasons at the Class B level. It was in Libby last year where the Hawks had one of their highlights of the season, defeating the Loggers in the District 7B tournament semifinals on the...

  • Bart Haflich Four-Oh?

    John Hamilton|Dec 7, 2017

You’ve heard of Henry David Thoreau… how about Bart Haflich Four-Oh? “That’s ‘Noxon Red Devils Four-Oh’,” Haflich, the coach of the Noxon girls and boys teams said in correcting the previous statement after both his teams swept their two games at the Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown last weekend. “Both teams did a lot of good things in our games at Frenchtown. We know there are tougher games looming ahead, but we are happy with how we played last week.” For the record, the Red Devil boys scored a 62-51 win over Clark Fork (Montana) Friday...

  • Young Lady Hawks fall to Loggers

    John Hamilton|Dec 7, 2017

When you are a young and inexperienced basketball team, there is only one way to become a mature and experienced team, and that is to play together. And the more the better. Playing together through a challenging game at Class A Libby Friday, the Lady Hawks may have lost 40-27 but coach Doree Thilmony was impressed with how her charges never stopped battling. “I am happy with how we played,” she said. “We had quite a few seniors we lost from last year’s team and we are kind of lacking in experience. And the only way you can get that experie...

  • Horsemen win big

    John Hamilton|Dec 7, 2017

Maybe the Plains Horsemen will be all right after all. And they just might be better than all right judging by the results last week. One year after building a 20-4 record behind all-conference players Ryan Ovitt, Alec Cole and Aaren VonHeeder and with all three of those players now graduated and gone, the Horsemen look like they could be contenders again after routing Drummond 62-36 Friday and Valley Christian 51-23 Saturday in the Tip-Off Tournament at Frenchtown last weekend. Now 2-0, coach Mike Cole and his Horsemen will ride into Darby Fri...

  • Savages lose 2

    John Hamilton|Dec 7, 2017

The Hot Springs Savage Heat boys are not short on desire, but they are a little short on bodies. Armed with a roster of only six players, coach Ricky DePoe and his latest edition of the Savage Heat dropped a pair of games in the Tip-Off Tournament at Frenchtown, falling to Seeley-Swan 52-28 Friday and to Darby 46-27 Saturday. DePoe and his band of six will now not play again until Dec. 14, when they visit the Two Eagle River Eagles in Pablo for both teams’ District 14C conference opener. Brandon Knudsen and Tyler Carr scored 10 points each a...

  • Trotters drop 2 in Frenchtown

    John Hamilton|Dec 7, 2017

The District 14C Plains Trotters dropped a pair of games to two of the best 13C teams last week in the season-opening Tip-Off Tournament in Frenchtown. Coach Jessica Nagy and her Trotters lost to Drummond 45-40 Friday and then fell to Clark Fork 52-28 Saturday. Now 0-2, the Trotters’ only game this week is at Darby in another non-conference clash. Darby is also 0-2 after losing to Noxon 38-31 and to St. Regis 55-26 in their two games at Frenchtown. Plains led Drummond 31-25 heading into the fourth quarter of that game before the Lady Trojans e...

  • Edible art on display in Plains

    Ed Moreth|Dec 7, 2017

Installing an air conditioning unit on a gingerbread house is a bit unusual, unless the builder is 11-year-old Teagan Saner, who nabbed the Outstanding Use of Decorations Award at the Second Annual Gingerbread House Class at the Dog Hill Bistro. Nine children from 3-11 years old took part in the competition Saturday from 3:30-5 p.m. when they put their creative talents to build their grandest gingerbread house, even though most were eating their construction materials as they worked. "The...

    Shana Neesvig|Dec 7, 2017

Every October Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks (FWP) conducts surveys to determine what species, and quantities are present in the Cabinet Gorge and Noxon and Thompson Falls reservoirs. This fall gill nets were set, different species were caught, and FWP as given a general idea of what is going on in our waters. Ryan Kreiner, FWP, stated that information gathered “does not represent a population estimate, but rather a way to look at species trends over time.” Population estimates are not achievable because some species, such as “la...
