Plains High School students and staff were determined to have their annual Turkey Bowl this year. It was not an easy task, with COVID-19 restrictions, but it was a success. Organized by five National Honor Society (NHS) students, the faux sporting event was again enjoyed by staff and students.
After lunch on November 19, the last day before Thanksgiving break, students gathered in their classes to watch two teams compete in the gymnasium in a heated game of two-hand touch football. The entire game was streamed live through YouTube in classrooms so everyone could watch without crowding the gym. One team was composed of freshmen and seniors, and the other of sophomores and juniors. The first wore colored jerseys, and the second competed in regular school attire. The game was announced by seniors Peter Carey, Brayden Good and Duncan Chisholm. Six players were allowed per team on the court at a time and throughout the game each team cycled in new players.
The freshman and senior teams came out on top, in the end, with a final score of 48-14. Some seniors were allowed to sit in the bleachers and watch. According to Celsey Vonheeder with NHS, this was done because "we just wanted to give them a chance to sit in the bleachers, since it will be their last year."
