Hawks dominate Whitefish 16-1 at home

The Plains and Thompson Falls high school softball teams are getting into the swing of the season. The Hawks added another win to their season records last week while the Trotters were unable to best their opponents

The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks added another home win to the season last Wednesday after defeating the Whitefish Bulldogs 16-1. Sarah Koskela came out pitching for the Hawks, getting a three-person no-hit strikeout at the top of the first inning. The Hawks were able to get five runs off three hits in the bottom of the first, taking a quick lead over the Bulldogs. Whitefish was able to get on the board at the top of the second, but was quickly met with the soaring Hawks who were able to score in 11 runs at the bottom of the second. While the Bulldogs were able to get several hits in the third inning it wouldn't be enough to keep the game going.

"I think the girls adjusted really well in this game, since we had to change up the way we hit and the girls did really amazing. I think the second inning proves that" Coach Jared Koskela stated.

Mackenzie Robinson and Oliva Harnett each got three runs for the Lady Hawks. Koskela, Brooklyn Cork and Annalise Fairbank each scored two. Olivia Fitchett, Gabi Haunum, Addie Traver and Callie McGillis each made it home once for Thompson.

The Plains Trotters took on the Polson Pirates at home last Tuesday falling 15-0.

The Pirates scored eight runs in the first inning, including a run scored on a walk, a runner stealing home and three more walk-ins. For the Trotters, Jaelynn Carr would single. She would be the only Trotter to get on base before the end of the inning. A walk would draw a run for the Pirates in the second inning, and a steal of home would add another point on the board for Polson. The Pirates would add three more runs before the Trotters were able to get the third out at home. Polson would strike Plains out in three batters in the bottom of the second inning. At the top of the third, Polson was able to add to the board after a walk drew another run. The Trotters were able to get their three outs on the base paths, after an out on appeal at home, out on appeal at third base, and an appeal at second. Polson would have another no hitter three person strikeout to take the win.

The Trotters then saw Missoula-Arlee-Charlo (MAC) at home on Thursday taking the fall 16-1.

Plains opened the scoring after a steal of home scored one run by Jaelynn Carr. MAC would answer back in the bottom of the first, scoring eight runs on two hits to take the 8-1 lead. MAC would pitch a no hitter three person strikeout at the top of the second, while scoring seven more runs on five hits in the bottom of the second. Both teams would go runless in the third inning and MAC was able to sneak in one more run in the fourth to take the win.

Carr, Aubree Butcher, Teirainy Bellinger, Montana Taylor, and Marissa Young each collected one hit for Plains. Carr and Young each stole multiple bases for the Trotters, and Plains was able to steal four bases in the game. The Trotters will face the Troy Trojans at home on Friday starting at 1 p.m.

The Lady Hawks had their turn at MAC last Saturday falling 4-16.

Thompson was able to get on the board quickly in the first inning, but MAC answered with a run to tie up the score going into the second. Both teams would remain scoreless in the second inning, and MAC would keep Thompson to only one run in the fourth inning. MAC was able to run in four runs on three hits in the bottom of the fourth inning making their lead over the Hawks even larger. The Lady Hawks never faltered and kept a level head. They were able to gain two more runs in the fifth inning, while keeping MAC scoreless once more. The roles would switch in the sixth inning as MAC was able to cage the soaring Lady Hawks keeping them scoreless, while gaining two runs. MAC would keep their defenses on point in the last inning keeping Thompson to no runs. MAC would add five more runs to take the win.

"I thought we had errors this game, but not enough to throw the game away. MAC was just on top of their game. We are excited to continue to learn and get better as the season goes on." Coach Koskela said

The Lady Hawks were on the road Tuesday, taking on Troy (results will be in next week's Ledger), then host Bonners Ferry on Thursday.
