  • Local organizations get boost from Phillips 66

    Annie Wooden|Jan 18, 2018

Three local groups recently received donations from Phillips 66, a global company with local ties. Phillips 66 operates the pipeline terminal just east of Thompson Falls. Philip Williamson, Terminal Supervisor for Phillips 66 in Thompson Falls, presented checks to the Sanders County Sheriff's Office, Thompson Falls Rural Fire Department and Plains/Paradise Rural Fire Department. The Sanders County Sheriff's Office received $10,000 to be used to help purchase a new patrol vehicle. The Sheriff's...

  • Riders give back to communities

    Shana Neesvig|Jan 18, 2018

Small communities grow big hearts. Cabinet Ridge Riders (CRR) is no exception to that statement. Three times a year CRR organizes events to raise funds that help support the community in multiple ways. Shellie Anderson, CRR member, said the club "has three Poker Run events each year. Snowmobiling in February, ATV in June and horseback riding also in June." Funds collected by the non-profit organization, through sponsorship of these events, "are all given back to the community in some way or...

  • Popcorn earns spot as American snack staple

    Shana Neesvig|Jan 18, 2018

Pop...pop...pop, pop, pop, pop! Ah, the sweet sound, and scent, of popcorn popping. Popcorn is a long-time favorite amongst many Americans. In fact, it is so popular that a national day recognizing the explosive little kernels has been designated. Although historians have drawn a blank as to the holiday's origin, Jan. 19 is officially National Popcorn Day. According to nationaldaycalendar.com, the word "corn" actually means "grain" in Old English. To be more precise, the term references the...

  • Making the west best again

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

Is the west becoming the best? If the Thompson Falls Blue Hawk grapplers and several other teams from west of the Continental Divide have anything to say about it, it is. Those teams' performances at the Choteau Classic last week, led by the Hawks, may prove that the wrestling power shift has already occurred. Malta won the 2018 Choteau Classic title with 180 points, Thompson Falls was second with 164.5, Whitehall (121.5) third, Plains-Hot Springs (119.5) fourth and Florence (103) fifth in the 3...

  • P-HS surges to 4th place in Choteau

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

The Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen were Choteau Classic team champions last year and are champions again after last week’s wrestling show, one of the biggest of any Class B-C season, in northern Montana. Maybe not team champions, but champions nonetheless. Led by Choteau individual champs Daniel Uli and Josiah Vanderwall (at 126 and 132 pounds), second place winner Conrad Vanderwall (120), fourth place finisher Austin Stafford (145) and fifth place earner Luke Lile (160), the Savage Horsemen scored 119 team points and finished a highly r...

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

The Kato just keeps going and going and going… One of the longest running regular season wrestling tournaments in Montana, the 2018 edition of the Ted Kato Invitational, affectionately referred to as “the Kato,” will be held at TFHS Saturday. As always hosted by the Thompson Falls Blue Hawks, this year’s Kato will also include Superior, Arlee, Florence, Plains-Hot Springs, Mission-Charlo, Bigfork, the Kalispell Flathead JV and the Missoula Sentinel JV. The coaches meeting before the tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the wrestling set to...

  • Bad news for you-two's

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

It was bad news for you-two's when Bigfork visited Thompson Falls for a boy-girl doubleheader last Thursday. The reason the news was bad for you-two's – with the you-two's being the Thompson Falls Blue Hawk boys and Lady Hawk basketball teams – was the fact that Bigfork sports powerhouse teams, and that firepower was on full display as the Vikings swamped the Blue Hawk boys 87-59 and the Valkyries ran past the Lady Hawks 63-22. The Hawk boys played the Vikings, unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the...

  • Haflich wants all 32 minutes

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

NOXON – Noxon Lady Red Devil coach Bart Haflich doesn't wants 16 or 24 – he want the full Monte, 32 minutes of concentrated basketball effort from his girls. "We have to play all four quarters, good from start to finish," he said. "We had good first halves in both of our games last week but couldn't keep it up. Good teams like Troy and Plains will beat you if you let up at all, and that is what happened to us last week." The Devils dropped a pair of home games in just such fashion last week, fal...

  • Horsemen stop Eagles, Devils

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

Plains coach Mike Cole wants more consistently good basketball play from his Horsemen. One thing his boys have consistently been able to do, and is something that Cole cannot find fault with, is win. Cole and his Horsemen counted two more Ws last week as they improved to 5-1 in District 14C play and 9-1 overall with victories over Two Eagle River (63-34 in Plains Friday) and Noxon (51-35 in Noxon Saturday), but Cole always sees room for improvement. “We have our moments when we are pretty good,” he admitted, “but there is always things that...

  • Red Devil boys split games

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

The Noxon boys basketball team won one and lost one on their homecourt last week, defeating Troy 47-37 in a non-conference game Thursday and falling to Plains 51-35 in a District 14C encounter Saturday. Coach Bart Haflich wants his boys to be the ones making the moves, and not their opponents. "We can't let other teams' defenses dictate the flow of the game," he said. "We have to take care of the ball better and run better offensive sets." Haflich said slow starts have hampered the Red Devils...

  • Trotters win 14C wars

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

And the girls’ District 14C hoop wars rage on… Coach Jess Nagy and her Plains Trotters won two more 14C skirmishes last week, blasting past Two Eagle River 67-15 in Plains Friday and getting the best of the Lady Red Devils 51-31 in Noxon Saturday. The next basketball battles for the Trotters are with the Charlo Vikings in Plains Thursday, and against the Lady Trojans of Troy in Troy Friday. Lindsay Laws led the Trotter charge in the win over Two Eagle with 18 points, Jessica Thompson added 11, Rachel Huenink nine, Kara Altmiller seven, Kas...

  • Heat boys drop two

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

The Hot Springs Savage Heat boys don't have a lot of players – only six to be exact – but they do like to compete. And they can still win games, even if they are undermanned. Coach Ricky DePoe and his Savage Heat won their first game of the season Thursday in Hot Springs, scrapping past the visiting St. Regis Tigers 42-33. On the road Friday, the Heat fell 56-29 to Charlo in Charlo. The Heat have two more District 14C conference games on tap this week, visiting the unbeaten, No. 1 ranked Arl...

  • It's supposed to be fun

    John Hamilton|Jan 18, 2018

Basketball is meant to be fun, Hot Springs girls coach Richard Jackson says, and he sometimes feels the need to remind his players of that. "You should enjoy it, win or lose," Jackson said earlier this week. "If you are not having fun playing, what is the point? I have to remind the girls about that sometimes so they won't forget." Using that barometer for success, the Savage Heat girls had fun twice last week, falling 42-33 to St. Regis in Hot Springs and 56-29 to Charlo in Charlo Friday. Into...
