  • Water, sewer projects move forward

    Annie Wooden|Dec 1, 2022

The Woodside Park Water Board is celebrating this holiday season as their project to upgrade the water system for the neighborhood in the Cherry Creek area outside Thompson Falls is moving forward. Woodside Park on November 1 received a signed contract from the state releasing $1.258 million in funding that was awarded through a state competitive ARPA grant. The county earlier this year committed $1.350 million in matching ARPA funds to bring the total budget for the project to just over $2.6 million. The Woodside Park community has 52...

  • Creative calling

    Jennifer Curran|Dec 1, 2022

A calling that has been in the making by local artist Kathy Altman for seven years has been accomplished. Through a labor of love, Altman completed 14 stained glass window panels for the Saint William's Catholic Church in Thompson Falls. Because of their sheer size the last two, The Nativity Scene and The Resurrection, were by far the most challenging, Altman shared. They are 3 x 5 ft. apiece and took a year each to complete, said Altman. "I didn't think I would be able to do something so big,...

  • Holiday Kickoff

    Ed Moreth|Dec 1, 2022

Even in November, it was beginning to look a lot like Christmas in Plains last weekend with the "Kickoff to Christmas" holiday gala put on by the Plains Lions Club and the businesses of Plains. Three businesses held activities for children and several held special sales all day. This was the first time for the 406 Outlet to participate in the annual event, which is in its fourth year, though in the past it's been called the Christmas Extravaganza. "I think people came in just to get their face...

  • Local restaurant welcomes new owners

    Jennifer Curran|Dec 1, 2022

November 1 marked day one for the new owners of the iconic Minnie's Cafe in Thompson Falls. Daniel and wife Marlaina Moore have lived in the area for five years. He came in wanting to keep the integrity of the restaurant intact; the only imminent change was to get back to the seven days a week of operation. While Moore may be the new owner, he pointed out that it's general manager Kristie Brown who is running the show. Brown has been a key employee for five years, Moore stated. She is a native...

  • It's an honor

    Annie Wooden|Dec 1, 2022

I used to joke with a friend of mine that I’ll know I'm a big deal the day I get to be the grand marshal in a parade. Well, my time has come. I have the honor of serving as grand marshal of the Christmas on Main Street parade this Saturday in Thompson Falls. What is the grand marshal of a parade, and what does that person do? Typically, the grand marshal is a position of honor and takes the lead in the processional. The duties are often given to a community leader or well-known business person. And when it comes to folks who have held that p...

  • Slice of Life: Gratitude and grace

    Chelle Mitchell|Dec 1, 2022

As I write this it is a week before Thanksgiving, one of my favorite holidays of the year. I am busy planning my menu and ordering amazing pies. I’m preparing beds for the family who will arrive and fun things to do while they are here. And I’m thinking of all the things I am blessed with and grateful for. I am so thankful for my husband and that we have a home our family can travel to, for my parents being able to celebrate with us this year. I’m grateful that I’m able to prepare a holiday...

  • Remember When?

    Sherry Hagerman-Benton|Dec 1, 2022

6 YEARS AGO • DECEMBER 6, 1917 CLOSE CALL FOR SNIDER Careless Hunter Sends Bullet Through Coattail and then Beats It for Cover Dave Snider was the unintentional target for some careless hunter up in the Thompson River country last Friday and had about as narrow an escape from getting a bullet in his back as the most reckless could wish for. He was coming through a little thicket when he heard a shot not far away and heard the zip of the bullet close by. He immediately started to call to warn the hunter of his presence, but instead of c...

  • Exceptional service

    Dec 1, 2022

I just wanted to give a shoutout to our local DMV. I have in the past looked forward to dealing with the DMV (Drivers Licensing) with the same anticipation as going to my dentist for a tooth extraction. The young lady that does drivers licensing at the Sanders County courthouse is exceptional. She was great, very courteous, friendly , I was in and out in just a few minutes and treated very well. I could not have been treated better.Well done, I look forward to getting another renewal. Thank you, Ron Hawkinson, Thompson Falls...

Matt Regier was voted in as the Speaker of the House, Sue Vinton was elected to her second term as Majority Leader, and Rhonda Knudsen was elected as Pro Tem. The Republican representatives then elected their party whips as a final vote of leadership. The six whip officers elected were Brandon Ler, Jennifer Carlson, Terry Moore, N...

  • Plains juniors are Turkey Bowl champs

    Ed Moreth|Dec 1, 2022

The Rose Bowl is the oldest and biggest of the college football games, but it's got nothing on the Plains High School "Turkey Bowl," held last Tuesday, the last day of classes for the week before Thanksgiving. It was a flag football competition between the four high school classes with the freshmen first taking on the juniors and the seniors then battling the sophomores. The two-hour contest was run by the school's National Honor Society students - sophomore Wyatt Butcher, juniors Peyton Wasson...

  • Lanterns drift into the night

    Ed Moreth|Dec 1, 2022

They looked like colorful stars rising into the clear night over the Sanders County Fairgrounds Saturday night slowly disappearing into the darkness. The Cancer Network of Sanders County sent 60 lanterns into the sky as part of its annual Lantern Launch fundraiser, raising $600. "It's beautiful and it's emotional watching them go up," said Paula Ivy, treasurer for the CNSC and this year's project coordinator. • 4-H ambassadors teach dance

    Ed Moreth|Dec 1, 2022

by Ed Moreth Farm animals and 4-H seem to be synonymous, but maybe dancing should be added to their repertoire. The members of the South Side Sparks 4-H club want to be ready for the Christmas Dance on Dec. 23 at the fairgrounds pavilion, so the local 4-H ambassadors held a dance workshop Saturday evening at the pavilion. Twenty youngsters from the South Side Sparks and three from the Kootenai, Kids & Critters 4-H club from Lincoln County participated in the two-hour workshop. "It was fun to...
