HUNTING AN EAGLE, Falls senior Dylan Beckman watches his second shot on the par-5 No. 2 hole at Wild Horse land on the green Saturday. Beckman just missed the eagle putt and settled for a birdie on his way to the Plains Invitational individual title.

Like drives down the fairway, chip shots out of the bunker and putts into the cup; so pass the days of our golfing lives.

Coach Mike Bates said his Thompson Falls golfers made the most of their day in the Plains Invitational at Wild Horse golf course Saturday, as the Dylan Beckman-led boys battled to the team title, and the Elsie Brown-led Lady Hawks also played well.

Beckman was crowned as the Plains Invite individual boys' champ by playing through with an almost even-par round of 73, while Brown shot 90 to win fourth place in the girls' individual race.

Added in with the rounds posted by Kade Pardee (who placed second overall to Beckman with a 78), Michael Johnson (89) and Ethan Brown (90), the Hawk boys wound up with a score of 330 to win first place in team standings.

Johnson finished in a tie for sixth in single standings and Brown tied for eighth. Although he started to play Saturday, Kaden Sparks was forced to withdraw due to injury.

"Dylan played very well, he is pretty focused right now," Bates said. "Kade is really playing well for a freshman, and Michael and Ethan had good rounds too, although they did have a couple of blow-up holes that hurt them some."

Loyola was second to the Hawk boys with a team score of 347, Darby (423) was third, Superior (448) fourth and Eureka (492) fifth.

Ethan's older sister, Elsie Brown was the Hawks' leading lady with her fourth place individual finish, and Madison McKenzie carded 154 for Thompson Falls.

"Elsie is the complete package and she would have finished higher if a couple of holes didn't get away from her," Bates said. "Madison also played good golf and continues to learn as she goes."

The only full girls' team entered in the tourney, the Loyola girls totaled 356 strokes with Kylie Esh shooting down first place with a 74, Katie Fagg and Isa Tomazelli tied for second with an 84 and Kelsey Esh placed sixth overall with a 114.

Bates said his team played well at Wild Horse and looks for that trend to continue in two more big meets this week, at Eagle's Bend in Bigfork Thursday and at the friendly outdoor confines of River's Bend for the Thompson Falls Invitational Saturday.

The golfing is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. at River's Bend Saturday. With a rare favorable weather forecast for later this week, Bates said his linksters are fairly well chomping at the bit.

"We are due for some decent weather, it has been a pretty cold spring," he said. "We are excited about seeing that course. This should be a good tournament for us, and its especially important with divisionals at Bigfork later on."
