Devil boys win, improve to 6-0

A win by any other name is still a win.

Although there was nothing very pretty about it – in fact, it was actually pretty ugly – the Noxon Red Devil boys defeated Troy 49-46 in Noxon Thursday.

Coach Bart Haflich’s Devils improved to 6-0 with an equally ugly 40-30 win over Two Eagle River in Pablo Friday.

“It’s good to be 6-0 but we didn’t play well in either game last week,” Haflich said. “We finished the game well with Troy but, obviously we still have a lot of stuff that we need to work on.”

Haflich said Troy actually led the Devils with a few minutes to play before Noxon finally righted the ship and moved to the win.

“Alex (Currie) scored seven of his points in the last two minutes,” Haflich said. “Troy made a 3-pointer from half-court at the buzzer to make the final score look closer.”

Currie scored 19 points to lead Noxon, Rylan Weltz added 14, Levi Brubaker eight, Logan Wood four, and Edison VanVleet and Jeriko Smith two apiece.

Haflich didn’t feel the Devils played much better in the win over Two Eagle.

“We did not play well offensively in Pablo,” he said. “Two Eagle threw a zone defense on us and we struggled scoring points.”

No scoring details were available from the Two Eagle River game.
