Trotters survive Tigers and Heat; look ahead to Devils and Eagles

January 10, 2019

Sometimes it is not so much about winning as it is about surviving.

Plains Trotter coach Eddie Fultz had that feeling after his team eked out a win in what he called an ugly outing in St. Regis, which resulted in a 38-33 victory for Plains.

“I don’t know if it was the fact that we were rusty after the holiday break or what,” he said, “but it seems like we survived that game more than won it. Both teams had trouble taking care of the ball that night.”

Fultz pointed to the 34 turnovers his girls committed, and to the 33 St. Regis had on the other side of the ledger as proof of his assertion.

Playing somewhat better in Fultz’s estimation the next night, the Trotters defeated Sanders County rival Hot Springs 48-40 in Plains Friday.

The Trotters will stay on the District 14C trail this week, hosting Noxon Friday and visiting the Two Eagle River Eagles in Pablo Saturday.

Fultz says he feels like the Trotters are still adjusting to him as their new coach, and to the style of play he would like to employ.

“They are still trying to get used to me and the way I want us to play,” he said. “I think it will get better the more games we get under our belt.”

One of Fultz’s favorite players (and currently the team’s leader in scoring and rebounding averages), Rachel Huenink banked 16 points to lead the Trotters to the win in St. Regis. “I am really happy with Rachel’s post play,” Fultz said. “She is paying very well, doing everything I ask of her.”

Natlee Deschamps added nine points to Plains’ winning total, Kylee Altmiller canned seven, Kassidy Kinzie three, Haley Josephson two and Emma Morgan one.

Kylee Thompson scored 14 points to pace St. Regis and Madison Kelly added 10.

Against Hot Springs, Deschamps paced a balanced Plains attack with 13 points, Altmiller kicked in with 10, Kinzie nine, Huenink seven, Miera Loberg four, Josephson three, and Cree Lulack and Mariah Smith one apiece.
