Devils top Tigers, fall to Vikings

January 31, 2019

The Noxon Red Devil boys split a pair of District 14C conference games on the road last week, going into St. Regis and handing the Tigers a 40-33 loss and then playing Charlo close most of the way, before losing to the Vikings 48-32.

Devil coach Bart Haflich was pleased with his team’s defense but would like to see them attacking the basket more on the other end.

“Our defense was pretty good last week,” he said, “but we have to score the ball better, and we will be working on that these next few weeks.”

The Red Devils play at Arlee Friday and finally return home to host Hot Springs Saturday. “These are two more big conference games and we would like to improve our seeding position for the tournament,” Haflich said. “I like to think that we can compete with Arlee if we play well and expect another tough game with Hot Springs.”

The incentive for the Devils is clear, the Warriors, the two-time defending State C champs, are unbeaten in 14C play and ranked No. 3 in the latest Class C power poll while the Savage Heat surprised the Devils and defeated them handily in Hot Springs in their earlier encounter this season.

Noxon built a 12-5 lead after one quarter in St. Regis and held off the Tigers the rest of the way.

Rylan Weltz led the winners with 18 points, Alex Currie and Levi Brubaker scored seven apiece and Logan Wood and Edison VanVleet four each. Tanner Day scored 11 for St. Regis and Caleb Ball seven.

The Devils jumped out to a 10-3 lead after one quarter in Charlo last week, but then lost the second period 18-7 and could not recover after that.

Weltz scored 10 points to lead Noxon, Currie added nine, Brubaker eight and Wood five. Connor Koenig scored 18 points to pace Charlo, Landers Smith chipped in with nine and Roper Edwards and Brock Tomlin eight apiece.
