Sports live after all.

A few weeks removed from some heavy whining I did on these pages about the dearth of sports action to follow right now, I feel the need to apologize. There are a lot of people playing important games, matches and friendlies all over the world at this very instant, and I need to respect that fact, and watch what happens like a good sports fan should.

My friend Arlene pointed this out to me while out having breakfast the other day at a local eatery. Arlene was very polite with her protest but made the point clear that there are sports to watch that are, well, well worth watching.

She, like millions of other Americans, is absolutely in love with the United States’ women’s national soccer team and was breathlessly awaiting Tuesday’s World Cup semifinal match with England as of this writing.

And that’s not to mention the fact that Wimbledon, maybe the biggest tennis tournament in the world in any given year, just started its two-week run this past Monday, and will undoubtedly produce lots of watchable moments. Heck, it already did as a 15-year-old American girl (Coco Gauff) beat five-time Wimbledon Champ Venus Williams in straight sets in the first round Monday.

And that’s not even taking into account the fact that the major league baseball races are finally starting to become at least a little interesting for the average sports fan, and we will be treated to the annual spectacle of the All-Star game in the coming days.

Otherwise, meaningful news can also be found on a daily basis about the off-season in the other major sports with trades, free agent signings, coaching changes, etc.

As a sports fan, I need to fully acknowledge that there are some very interesting sports things going on right now. And as a sports writer in a small town in between high school sports seasons with very little going on locally, I need to talk about these other sports as I have nothing else to write about right now.

Wait a minute, that’s what I have been doing here and you are probably getting a little tired of it all, hearing me talk about it and reading me write about it.

Let the games continue then, I will be watching and if you are lucky, talking and writing about it some more.
