November 7, 2019

Free hiking maps and information are available locally for the Cube Iron / Cataract Area (CICC). Maps are available at libraries in Plains and Thompson Falls, at the county courthouse and at gift shops and selected businesses.

The CICC is a special area of mostly wild country, located on the north side of the Clark Fork between Thompson Falls and Trout Creek. The area is studded with many high peaks and mountain lakes, including the Four Lakes area. The map shows trailheads and trail descriptions for the many trails within the area. Connecting roads are shown also, including Graves Creek, Cougar Peak, Fishtrap, Thompson River and Vermillion Creek roads.

The area boasts a wide variety of wildlife including mountain goats, big horn sheep, roaming wolverines and grizzlies, as well as more common animals like deer and elk. Major peaks include, Cube Iron, Silcox, Mt. Headley, Cougar Peak, Graves Peak and Seven Point Mountain.

The CICC is a local group that supports “keeping this area just the way it is, wild and beautiful, for future generations to enjoy as we do. We consider the area an important asset to our communities, open for visitors and residents alike to use and enjoy.” For more information, pick up a map or visit cubeironcataract.org.
