Our Viewpoint

It's OK to admit this year is tough

November 26, 2020

You know what? This year has been a rough one. We are still dealing with a pandemic. We are having to make decisions about sending our kids to school, keeping our businesses open, and whether or not to see our families on Thanksgiving.

Most of us have never experienced anything like this in our lifetime. The divisiveness that came with election season only added to the stress that we're all feeling.

This week, we decided it's OK to feel the stress and feel like 2020 hasn't been that great. Yes, there have been worse years in history. Yes, there will be worse things for future generations. But for those of us in our 30s and 40s and even 50s, this will probably be the worst year we encounter.

But you know what? We're still here. Our kids are still in school. Our businesses are still open. Though the gatherings will be smaller, we'll still celebrate with our families on Thanksgiving.

In our efforts to change our attitudes about 2020, we realize that many things are still the same. We're thankful for our communities, where people still help each other and look after one another. We're thankful that we've had this extra time with our families. There have been more family dinners together at the table that any time we can remember.

It's not 2020's fault. People get sick. People die. Businesses open and close and people move on. But we're going to go ahead and stuff this one in the basement on December 31. We'll pull out the memories like the old school pictures tucked away in our parents' storage areas.

Have a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
