TF schools assess damage from storm

February 4, 2021

The Thompson Falls School Board met Monday to discuss upcoming projects for the school, as well as damages from the windstorm last month. Elementary Principal Len Dorscher commended his staff for how they handled the day. “It was actually a lot of fun, quite frankly,” said Dorscher. He mentioned how it was a good thing that the students had been kept in the school during the storm, especially considering that the storm had been so unpredictable. They had slight damage to the metal roof on one of the buildings, but nothing that will need to be repaired immediately.

High School Principal Dan Schrock stated that the high school had more considerable damage. The roof on the gymnasium will need to be replaced, and the insurance company is deciding on the claim. After noticing a drop in morale, Schrock spoke with the student council on ways to raise school spirits. “It has been a challenging year,” said Schrock.

The board approved the city sewer easements and briefly discussed the approval of the district policy manual and the approval of the 2020-2021 district calendar. The board also approved the hiring of Jessica Lewis as the new junior high track and field head coach, Danice Toyias as the junior high assistant volleyball coach and Kim Lakko as the junior high head volleyball coach. The board also accepted the resignation of music and band director Neil Harbel.

According to Athletic Director Jake Mickelson, Thompson Falls teams have been luckier than most this year, with the basketball teams having played nearly 10 games each, while most schools in the state are struggling at less than five.
