Carley Von Heeder wins Big Sky title

Breaks MSU school record, wins athlete of the meet award

Carley VonHeeder is not just a local legend anymore, she also is now a Montana State athletic icon.

A fifth-year senior at Montana State University, VonHeeder, who graduated from Plains in 2016, put her name in the Bobcat record books last week by winning the Big Sky Conference championship in the javelin in Ogden, Utah, destroying the previous school record with a monster throw of 173 feet, 10 inches and winning the 2021 Big Sky crown.

The second-place throw was almost 10 full feet behind VonHeeder’s winning effort. VonHeeder was named the outstanding female performer of the meet based on her incredible performance in Ogden.

A two-time state javelin champ for Plains High School in her sophomore and junior seasons (2013 and 2015, she placed second in 2016), VonHeeder, like most athletes around the world, was denied her 2020 season due to COVID-19 and decided to return to MSU for one more season, and will now likely cherish that decision to come back for the rest of her life.

The Big Sky title caps an outstanding college career for VonHeeder. As a freshman at MSU, she advanced to the West Regionals and finished 40th there in 2017. After taking ninth in the Big Sky Conference championships in ’18, she finished third in the Big Sky and 25th in the West Regionals in 2019.

Buoyed by the 10 team points VonHeeder garnered by winning the javelin, the Bobcat women finished third in the Big Sky meet with 78 points.

Another prodigal javelin thrower from Plains, class of 2016, Kimmy Earhart, who edged out VonHeeder for the ’16 State C javelin title, also threw in the Big Sky Championship for the University of Montana, finishing 13th with a best effort of 134-4 last week.

VonHeeder is a psychology major at MSU.
