  • January moisture boosts snowpack

    Feb 20, 2020

Abundant moisture spilled into the Treasure State from the Pacific during January, boosting snowpack in all river basins to near or above normal for February 1. In some locations, the amount of water added to the snowpack was record setting. Between December 30 and February 1, SNOTEL (SNOwpack TELemetry) sites west of the Continental Divide received up to 18 inches of snow water equivalent, roughly proportionate to 100 to 150+ inches of snowfall. Five SNOTEL sites would go on to set new records for monthly totals, and four SNOTEL sites...

  • Trae triumphant!

    John Hamilton|Feb 20, 2020

Don't play wrestling games with Trae Thilmony. If you do try it, you run the risk of Thilmony beating you at your own game. Doing just that, Thilmony avenged three earlier losses to rival Tanner Cook of Columbus-Absarokee-Park City in the 120-pound State B-C championship at First Interstate Arena in Billings Saturday, turning and pinning Cook in the closing seconds to win the title. Becoming Thompson Falls' 16th individual champ and finalizing his season record at 36-3, Thilmony got back at...

  • P-HS wrestlers compete at State B-C

    John Hamilton|Feb 20, 2020

It’s the State B-C tournament and it’s like regular season wrestling on steroids; if you want to compete you had better be the best prepared you can be. Coach Jeff Kujala’s Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen team of four – Brady Schrenk at 113 pounds, Mason Elliott at 120, Conrad Vanderwall at 138 and Bert DeTienne at 152 – got a good look at the State B-C tournament in Billings last week, and he wants them to remember what they just saw. “State is always a wake-up call,” Kujala said. “It can be a brutal place if you are not ready for it. ...

In a way, you become a grappling immortal, a champion not for just right now, but for always. It’s an accomplishment that can never be taken away from you once that first place MHSA medal is placed around your neck, up there on the podium, in the biggest wrestling event of any season in Montana. And that sense of accomplishment, that feeling of realizing your fondest dream while...

  • Vikings shade Heat in 14C showdown

    John Hamilton|Feb 20, 2020

HOT SPRINGS – There is some sickness floating around the Hot Springs Savage Heat girls locker room and that is of no help when you have a big game to play. Feeling the sickness, the under-the-weather Savage Heat lost a showdown game with District 14C rival Charlo 57-42. Clinching the outright league title with the win, coach Bret Thompson's Vikings improved to 10-0 in conference play and 18-0 overall with the win while the Savage Heat fell to 8-2 in league action and 16-2 overall. Owners of t...

  • Trotters swamp Noxon, down Two Eagle River

    John Hamilton|Feb 20, 2020

The Plains Trotters have been doing a slow burn this season, gradually heating up, getting a little bit better every time out. Now that tournament season has arrived, coach Eddie Fultz wouldn’t mind seeing that slow burn turn into a raging Trotter fire. Seeded No. 3 in this week’s District 14C tournament at Ronan, the Trotters will face Two Eagle River in the opening round of the tourney at 2:45 p.m. Thursday. If the Trotters get by the Eagles, they will face No. 2 seeded Hot Springs Friday at 2:45 in the Ronan Event Center. The top two tea...

Talk about finishing up on a high note. The No. 3 seed in this week's District 7B tournament, the Hawks will visit No. 2 Eureka for a semifinal game Thursday at 7 p.m. Bigfork will host either Mission or Troy in the other semifinal that same...

  • Heat make Vikings say uncle

    John Hamilton|Feb 20, 2020

HOT SPRINGS – Can you say uncle? Come on, say uncle, it’s time. The Hot Springs Savage Heat boys held the Charlo Vikings’ feet to the fire in Hot Springs Saturday, until the Lake County boys finally said uncle and left the Spa City on the short end of a 69-54 score. Finishing the regular season in fourth place in final 14C standings, the Savage Heat will play fifth place Charlo again Thursday at 4:30 p.m. in Ronan in the first round of the conference tournament. The winner of that game will advance into a semifinal with top-seeded Plains Friday...

  • Horsemen score beautifully ugly win

    Feb 20, 2020

It was an ugly win that ended up contributing to a beautiful result – the District 14C regular season championship and the No. 1 seed into this week’s conference tournament. Coach Tyrel Allen and his Plains Horsemen put the finishing touches on an undefeated, 10-0 14C campaign last week, edging past Noxon 50-48 in Plains Friday and stopping the Two Eagle River Eagles 72-41in Pablo Saturday. Now 15-3 overall, the No. 1 seeded Horsemen will await the winner of Thursday’s first round game between Hot Springs and Charlo, the No. 4 and 5 seede...

  • Lady Hawks win District 7B title, play Mission or Troy Thursday

    John Hamilton|Feb 20, 2020

The Lady Hawks could have ended up first, second or third. Taking control of their own hoop destinies with another inspired effort, the Lady Hawks decided to finish first, dumping the Bigfork Vals 50-41 on their home court in Bigfork Saturday. Completing play with a 14-4 overall record, coach Chadd Laws’ Hawks forged a three-way tie for first in final league standings with the win as they, Bigfork and Eureka all finished with 6-2 league records. As one of the district’s tri-champions, the Hawks were awarded the top seed into this week’s Distr...

  • Lady Devils score feel-good win

    John Hamilton|Feb 20, 2020

What better way to follow up a feel-good win, than with another feel-good win? Hoping to keep the good feelings going after a come-from-behind 43-37 win over visiting Lincoln in Noxon Saturday, coach Cortney Vohs and her Lady Devils will face St. Regis Thursday at 6:15 in the first round of the District 14C tournament at the Ronan Event Center Thursday. If the Devils defeat St. Regis, Noxon advances to the semifinals against top-seeded, undefeated Charlo at 6:15 Friday. Vohs thinks her Devils have a good chance of doing just that. “We beat St....

  • Devil boys nearly knock off Plains

    John Hamilton|Feb 20, 2020

The longer the season gets, the better the Noxon Red Devil boys seem to play. Continuing a season of improving basketball returns, coach Ryan Weltz’s Red Devils completed regular season play last week, dropping a dramatic 50-48 decision to District 14C regular season champion Plains in Plains Friday and then falling 51-42 to visiting Lincoln in a non-conference game in the West End Saturday. The tight game with Plains, which Noxon had their chances to win, stands in stark contrast to the game these two teams played earlier this season in N...
