PABLO – For a few Lady Devils this was the end but for others it was a new beginning.

Although seniors Delaney Weltz, Madison Koonce and Kali Murray played their last high school basketball games ever, and fellow senior Kristina Brown, who was out with illness, also watched as it happened, coach Ryan Weltz and his otherwise very young Lady Devils completed season play at the District 14C tournament in Pablo last week.

The Lady Devils, after falling to Plains in the first round Thursday, came back to eliminate Two Eagle River 53-14 Friday before being eliminated 45-26 by St. Regis Saturday morning.

Noxon coach Ryan Weltz, who took the job last fall thinking he could guide his daughter Delaney and her best friend Kristina Brown during their final seasons of high school friendship and basketball playing together, had that vision destroyed when Brown became ill and was forced to the sideline, leaving a ton of pressure weighing on his daughter.

"A lot of pressure fell on Delaney this season and she handled it very well," a proud father said. "It was just kind of tough for her, being so counted on all the time. But I am really happy with how the year went and how all the girls progressed.

"You can't fault how the girls played," he added. "They definitely went down swinging, played as hard as they could in Pablo last week."

After the loss to Plains, the Devils rebounded with the easy victory over Two Eagle River. Freshman Avery Burgess scored 16 points to lead Noxon to that win, Delaney Weltz and Vanessa Horner added 12 points each, Kali Murray six, Chelsea Vohs four, Jaedyn Murray three and Koonce, Izzy Lampshire and Rachel Ehinger two apiece.
