Horsemen turn their bus around

Will open season hosting Troy Trojans Friday night

Getting that first NC didn’t take long – not long at all.

The Plains Horsemen were forced to turn around and go home after getting all the way to Drummond Friday, turning the potential Western Conference 8-Man football game into the season’s first dreaded NC.

That NC means No Contest, and we could see more of them yet this season. The Horsemen’s coach Eddie Fultz knew there could be NCs coming this season, he just may not have happened to expect them so soon.

The Horsemen were in fact, en route to Philipsburg Friday when the call from the Plains administration came in. The team bus was only 10 miles from Drummond, and Fultz and his boys were set to play the Flint Creek Titans.

“It was the perfect storm, we are hoping to play, almost there, and then we get the call. They tell me Flint Creek had a kid test positive. I sort of jokingly asked if they wanted us to turn around and they said yes,” he said.

“We were bummed, but we turned the bus around.”

Fultz did note that the Horsemen were able to get back to Plains in time to get another important practice in, and that they practiced again Saturday. Players are not eligible to play until they have a certain amount of practices in and several Horsemen were a few practices short. The extra practices Plains got in will enable senior Clayton Hill to suit up in the Horsemen’s next game.

Although it would have been nice to get that first game in last week, Fultz said the NC will not work against his Horsemen in the long run.

“The coaches and ADs had a big meeting before the season and we made the decision that NC games would not be made up this season,” he said. “Those games are lost forever.”

Hoping for no more NCs in the near future, the Horsemen are set to open season play hosting 0-1 Troy Friday. Troy lost 70-16 to Arlee in Troy Friday.

“Hopefully we will be able to play,” Fultz said. “This could be an interesting season, we will just have to see how it goes, and take it week to week.”
