BLUE HAWK CROSS COUNTRY SENIORS Megan Baxter, Josey Neesvig and Justin Morgan began the season in an impromptu race in Thompson Falls Saturday. Hawks are scheduled to run in the Eureka Invitational Friday.

Denied one race, the Thompson Falls cross country team created their own; and then went out and ran like the wind.

Thompson Falls coach Sarah Naegeli and some of her running cohorts quickly set up a course and organized the event when the Deer Lodge Invitational, the race the Hawks were originally going to run in, was canceled.

Led by seniors Justin Morgan and Josey Neesvig, who cruised to wins on the boys and girls side, Thompson Falls hosted Mission for a 5K dual meet run in Thompson Falls Saturday morning.

Although Morgan won the boys race in a fast-twitch time of 18:03, out-pacing Mission's Andrew Rush by over a minute and a-half, the Mission boys had the depth to defeat the Hawks 27-28.

Neesvig was similarly dominating in her win in the girls race, finishing in 22:36, over a minute ahead of second place teammate Ellie Baxter (23:47). No team scores were kept in the girls race.

Freshman Cael Thilmony was the next highest Thompson Falls finisher for the boys, clocking 21:30 to place fourth, Nathan Cottingham (23:19) placed sixth, Andy Koonce (on Noxon, but running for Thompson Falls this season) was seventh in 23:30, Briar Palmer (26:42) took tenth and Ben Croft (26:44) twelfth. JJ Fields is the also on the Hawk team but didn't run Saturday.

With the Lady Hawks, freshman Hattie Neesvig was fourth in 24:24, Megan Baxter sixth in 27:24, Roni Hanks seventh in 30:12 and Faith Palmer eighth in 30:36. Tiana Goatley is also on the Lady Hawk squad but did not run Saturday.

Andrew Rush (19:40) was the top finisher for the Mission boys and Cedar Hunt (24:02) led the Mission girls in the Thompson Falls dual.

In the junior high races, Aubrey Baxter of Thompson Falls won the girls side in 14:43 while Mission's Robbie Nuila claimed the boys race in 12:34.

Solvieg Nygaard (16:15), Kylee Huff (17:11), Clair Lakko (19:44), Marley Neesvig (22:47) and Summer Olmos (29:49) followed with the junior high girls. Thompson Falls did not have any junior high boys running Saturday.

Up this week for Blue Hawk cross country is the Eureka Invitational Friday.

Naegeli is the head coach of the Thompson Falls cross country program, Sarah Stover is the junior high coach and Jeneese Baxter assists with the coaching of both programs.
