  • SCCFF recognizes Domestic Violence Awareness Month

    Ed Moreth|Oct 13, 2022

The Sanders County Coalition For Families is once again getting the word out that domestic violence continues to be a problem by placing a near six-foot tall purple and white ribbon on a fence along Railroad Street as part of the "Domestic Violence Month Campaign." Kayla Torres, SCCFF's community outreach coordinator, installed the plastic ribbons in Noxon, Trout Creek, Plains, and Hot Springs last week as part of October's National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Jail inmates at Thompson...

  • COMMUNITY EFFORT

    Annie Wooden|Oct 13, 2022

They say Rome wasn't built in a day. Maybe it would have been, had they had the commitment and drive of the Cabinet Ridge Riders (CRR). More than 40 volunteers with the Trout Creek group have spent nearly 2,000 hours rebuilding the warming hut at Gem Peak near Trout Creek, which was burned by fire in August. The warming hut was destroyed by fire in the early morning hours of August 25. The Ridge Riders have a special use permit with the U.S. Forest Service for the structure. Cleanup began Labor...

Fifth grade students from all Sanders County schools were invited to Thompson Falls State Park last Tuesday for a morning of outdoor, water-based education. Students rotated through six different stations set throughout the park. Juli Thurston with Friends of...

As voting day nears, local candidates are continuing to meet with constituents in order to answer any lingering questions before voters head to the polls on November 8. Last Tuesday and Wednesday evening, candidates met at the Rex Theater in Thompson Falls for local forums sponsored by the Sanders County Ledger. • Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose

    Annie Wooden|Oct 13, 2022

The Deer Lodge football coach was recently suspended pending an investigation after he recently switched sidelines during a home football game. The school board voted Monday to keep Coach Andrew Verlanic. In an interview with the Deer Lodge News Network (DLNN), coach Verlanic detailed his decision and his disappointment in the lack of support from the school district. “When you get booed at the pep rally as a football team, who wants to go out? Who wants to be a part of it?” Verlanic told DLNN. Later in the interview he continued, “As we stand...

  • Montana Viewpoint: I may not know much about laws, but I know what I like

    Jim Elliott|Oct 13, 2022

I had a neighbor once who spent several days in the county jail because he wouldn’t make his mortgage payments. He felt he had a constitutional right to not pay them because the money wasn’t backed by gold. There’s a longer story there, of course, and he wasn’t in jail because he didn’t pay the mortgage but because of an ensuing confrontation with a SWAT team when they came to enforce his eviction notice. People get up in arms because of laws they believe are unconstitutional that they thin...

  • Hypocrisy on full display

    Oct 13, 2022
    1

Mr. Elliott's change of focus to a single event of sending a few illegal aliens to punctuate the invasion occurring on our southern border put the predictable hypocrisy of the leftists on full display. Mr. Elliott would have us believe this is a legal operation where nefarious entities are paying for and luring millions of ignorant poor into a multi prong attack on America. Well over the number of American service members killed in Vietnam and Afghanistan have been killed veiled by creating this crisis on our border. Fentanyl made in China,...

  • Write-ins could divide votes

    Oct 13, 2022

Editor, Thank you to Annie Wooden and the Ledger for sponsoring the candidate forums at the Rex on October 3 and 4. It’s always enlightening to hear the candidates articulate their job qualifications and thoughts on the positions they are seeking or hoping to be re-elected to. I was very disappointed that two of three write-in candidates did not take this opportunity to face the voters and explain why they decided to continue to run for sheriff after being defeated in the primary. Knowing the issues their write-in candidacy could create with d...

  • Remember When?

    Sherry Hagerman-Benton|Oct 13, 2022

9 YEARS AGO • OCTOBER 20, 1937 SALMON COMING UP Every year the salmon come up the river. As soon as the fall rains commence and the water rises, they start up out of the Columbia, Priest Lake and Pend d’Oreille and strike for the headwaters. Usually about September 15 to October 1 they reach the dam at Thompson Falls where they are checked. Forced back they spawn in the river below the power house. At this time, fishermen by the score harpoon, drag line and with whirling spoon inveigle and catch them by the thousands. When word came last week...

  • Question of the week

    Miriah Kardelis|Oct 13, 2022

NATASHA CASH, Trout Creek – “My biggest pet peeve is when people sit there and clean their ears with their fingers and then go about their day.” CHRIS PAEZ, El Paso, Texas - “I actually don’t. My major was in Psychology. There is something called the Major Attribution Theory that I believe in. I just try to practice understanding. I don’t like rude people or bad breath.” JOHN DOYLE, Thompson Falls – “I do but I can’t think of...

  • Plains continues street paving project

    Ed Moreth|Oct 13, 2022

The final major roadwork for Plains is being completed this week with Rehbein Enterprises resurfacing the second block of Farmer Street and a large portion of Blake Street. Plains Mayor Dan Rowan said it was the only road work done this year because the town had trouble getting anyone to bid on road projects. Farmer Street was one of those on the priority list devised by public works, but Blake Street was especially in need and given more consideration because of the community ambulance...

  • Plains picks sludge removal company

    Ed Moreth|Oct 13, 2022

Members of the Plains Town Council voted unanimously to approve the Wastewater Change Order for Sludge Removal motion, giving Prospect Construction the green light to handle that part of the overall project. Sludge removal was the only new business for last Monday night’s monthly meeting at City Hall, which took less than an hour. Prospect Construction, a company based in Puyallup, Wash., and Missoula, was the low bidder to construct the new lagoon, but the sludge issue was not included because the regulatory details covering the dismantling o...

  • Food for thought

    Oct 13, 2022

Food for thought Very recently I decided to vet Jim Brown's candidacy for Montana Supreme Court. In doing my own due diligence before I "spend my vote", I wanted to learn more about him. I did NOT know: * Jim Brown is not a well-known attorney in good standing despite being an attorney for over 10 years. I could not find any information regarding his work in peer/client ratings of ethics and professionalism and legal ability for attorneys in the US. * Jim Brown is the current Chairperson for Montana Public Service Commission. I did not do a...

  • Think carefully

    Oct 13, 2022

Actions speak louder than words. As our county grows, infrastructure needs are going to increase and County Commissioners will have to make choices of where to put additional services, and how to obtain the property to do so. The Town of Plains, under Mayor Dan Rowan, forced us to sell 10 acres of our property via eminent domain. We didn’t want a sewage lagoon on our property that we already had plans for, but realizing the need, and the immense power of the government, we offered to negotiate to arrive at a fair and equitable outcome. The l...

TFWC donated a tray of cookies to the elementary, junior and senior high school faculty members as part of an annual tradition that dates back to more than three decades. “Some traditions get started and observed without the memory of how or why,” said Lorraine Renard, TFWC secretary. “It’s the act of doing it that brings fulfillment of our club’s commitment to the community.” Durin...

  • There was a time

    Oct 13, 2022

by Lee Pitts These are not the best of times In America. Our country is in tatters. It feels like the greatest experiment in Democracy the world has ever seen is dying a slow and ugly death. Perhaps it cannot be helped because great societies flare and flame but their soaring flight has always been fleeting. Sadly, great societies are never born again. But let it be remembered that there was once a time when we could grow our own food, make our own clothes, cars and tools; when the words "Made in USA" meant something. During the throes of...

  • Hawks win in three against Trotters

    Annie Wooden|Oct 13, 2022

The Thompson Falls Blue Hawks traveled to Plains to take on the Trotters on Thursday. The Hawks won in three straight sets, 25-7, 25-14, 25-17, but the Trotters put on a valiant effort in front of their energetic home crowd. As the first set started, the Hawks took a significant lead with senior Natalie Roberts serving up several points and the Hawks taking an early 12-2 lead. Plains made a run and kicked their defensive efforts into gear as they made a comeback, but the Hawks kept their dominan...
