  • TC bridge schedule set

    Annie Wooden|Jan 23, 2020

The Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) project to repair the Clark Fork River bridge will begin in April. MDT has completed the design of the project, which will include a full closure of the bridge for six consecutive weeks of the project. MDT said in a press release that most of the estimated $10.5 million project will include single-lane closures of Highway 200 over the bridge, but the full bridge closure is required due to structural limitations and to maintain public safety while...

  • Wood's bail request denied

    Annie Wooden|Jan 23, 2020

A judge denied a bail reduction for former Thompson Falls resident Danielle Wood during a hearing in 20th District Judicial Court on Tuesday. Wood’s attorneys, Kirk Krutilla and Will Managhan, had argued for Wood’s $1 million bail to be reduced or for the judge to release her without bail to be on house arrest while living with her father in Washington state. Defense attorneys made the argument on Tuesday that contact with their client was difficult while she was in jail because of timing and recording of meetings. Judge Deborah “Kim” Christo...

  • New building owners keep art gallery going

    Miriah Kardelis|Jan 23, 2020

For six years now, Kathy Altman has been a part of the Sunflower Art Gallery cooperative. Her stained-glass artwork is proudly displayed alongside the other locally made pieces in the Thompson Falls gallery. When the building the co-op resides in went up for sale, Kathy and her husband Joe decided to jump at the opportunity to own a conducive piece of real estate. However, their main goal was to keep the Sunflower Art Gallery open for the artists. "This is not a 'for profit' endeavor. This is a...

  • Our Viewpoint

    Jan 23, 2020

This summer, the Trout Creek bridge over the Clark Fork River will be repaired by the Montana Department of Transportation. Driving over that bridge this week, we think the project is well overdue. There will be one-lane traffic over the bridge during most of the construction, with the full bridge closed for six full weeks. This sounds like a huge inconvenience — and it will be. There are many people who drive from west of Trout Creek or even Noxon to Thompson Falls for work. Some hospital employees drive all the way to Plains. Having to go u...

  • Montana Viewpoint

    Jim Elliott|Jan 23, 2020

Well, it has come to this; President Trump has been impeached by the House of Representatives and this week the trial is taking place that will determine whether he stays on as president or leaves in disgrace. Of course, by the time you read this it will all be over, and the outcome determined. I am not necessarily a betting person, but on this I would lay good odds: he stays. After all, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has said — not indicated, but said — that the Republican Senate wil...

  • Outlook not so good

    Jan 23, 2020

I haven’t picked up a Ledger in a while, but I was curious to see what our local political heroes had to offer. First I read that our local candidates’ top priorities are “predator management.” I assume that means seeking penalties for local religious leaders who face no penalties because of archaic religious law? Or maybe it means finally trying to put a cap on the number of hunting outfitter days in this county? Next I read that there were 250 people at a local meeting in Trout Creek with FWP. I was there and I only counted 105. Either...

The fund for the hospital has risen to more than $60,000. A recent drive netted $22,218.48 to be added to $38,000 obtained through sale of bonds five years a...

The local ones can be the most important.” GLORIA MEAGHER, Thompson Falls – “I will be watching the Republican.” JIM MORKERT, Trout Creek – “There’s several of them. I guess either presidential or Montana Senate, well, both of them.” JEREMIAH MOYER, Trout Creek – “Just the presidential race really. I will be watching President Trump be reelected.” TRISTAN TAYLOR, Trout Creek – ...

  • A baker's guide to flour

    Miriah Kardelis|Jan 23, 2020

Whether you are a prolific baker, or someone who considers themselves a rookie, it can never hurt to know the difference between all those different types of flour you see on the market shelf. While many people stock their pantry with all-purpose flour, for peak results, you should go with the right kind of flour the recipe was developed with. The first step is to understand what defines each type of flour and what differentiates them from the rest. It is also important to understand the protein content and in return, how the protein content...

  • SNOW FUN

    Jan 23, 2020

Local non-profit Project ASCENT held their second annual winter carnival last Saturday, filling the area next to the Wild Coyote with games and fun. Families competed in snowshoe races, rode on hay wagons and brought their sleds to the Wild Coyote's sledding hill for the event. Andrea Christensen with Project ASCENT said attendance doubled at this year's event as they welcomed about 350 people. The non-profit provides outdoor education and experiences to kids throughout Monta...

  • STUDENT EXPRESSIONS

    Ed Moreth|Jan 23, 2020

Drawing pictures can be kid stuff, but when it comes to the Art on the Walls program at Clark Fork Valley Hospital (CFVH), the children's show is the most popular one of the year. Nearly 150 people showed up for the Sanders County Arts Council's (SCAC) Art on the Walls Student Show reception at CFVH last Tuesday evening. One hundred and ninety-four students from Plains and Noxon schools from kindergarten to seniors displayed their artwork this quarter, including one Noxon home-schooled student,...

  • New transfer station makes dumping easier

    Shana Neesvig|Jan 23, 2020

No doubt the new solid waste station east of Thompson Falls is top notch, but there seems to be some confusion on procedures and protocol when it comes to dumping waste. Although signs are located throughout the facility, knowing exactly where to go and what to do is a mystery to some. According to Jason Peterson, Solid Waste District Supervisor, and station attendants, it is not necessary nor required to check in with an attendant when visiting. Unless there is a problem, a full bin, or there...

  • Hawks are hard-trying, high-flying

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

by John Hamilton Ask about the results but never question the effort. The hard-trying, high-flying Blue Hawks lost a pair of hotly contested games last week, falling to District 7B-leading Bigfork 63-58 in Thompson Falls Friday and to District 6B's Deer Lodge Wardens 59-47 in Deer Lodge Saturday. Coach Jake Mickelson did not like losing the games but he does appreciate the effort his Blue Hawks are playing with right now. The game with the very young but very athletic Bigfork Vikings was a...

  • Lady Hawks score signature win

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

Consider it official; signed, sealed and delivered. The Thompson Falls Lady Hawks signed on the dotted line against Bigfork in Thompson Falls last Thursday, registering a signature win in the District 7B conference season with an exciting 52-42 triumph over the visiting Vals. With that District 7B message delivered, coach Chadd Laws took to the road Saturday and delivered another message to 6B's Deer Lodge Lady Wardens, knocking off the Powell County girls 55-39. "We have to close out games and...

  • Blue Hawk wrestlers battle through ultra-tough Choteau Tournament

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

With only about a month of the season remaining, it’s time for Montana prep wrestlers to gather amongst themselves, fight it out and build the pecking order for what really counts – the upcoming divisional and state tournaments. The Choteau tournament last week and the Kato Memorial in Thompson Falls this week are just such the kind of places where champions are forged, made by flesh and blood struggles. Thompson Falls coach Mike Thilmony was very satisfied with his Blue Hawks last week at the Choteau Tournament in spite of the fact that the...

  • When the Hawks were kings

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

Jimmy Carter was the President of the United States but Ronald Reagan had just been voted in and would soon be taking his place in the Oval Office when the 1979-80 prep wrestling season began. In the Pacific Northwest, Mount St. Helens was rumbling mightily but Harry R. Truman was still holding on to his hotel and living dangerously on the shores of nearby Spirit Lake, after he had repeatedly been told to leave. If you were watching television at that time – and everyone was in those days of pre...

  • P-HS grapplers score in Choteau

    John Hamilton|Jan 23, 2020

Building towards a big finish – at the State B-C meet in Billings Feb. 14-15 – the Plains-Hot Springs Savage Horsemen worked the mats with 35 other teams in the Choteau Invitational Friday and Saturday. Led by senior Conrad Vanderwall, who won sixth place at 138 pounds, the Savage Horsemen scored 19 team points in the two-day tourney. “It was really tough competition in Choteau, the majority of the top kids in the state were there,” coach Jeff Kujala said. “We wrestled pretty well and now know what we need to work on over the next three wee...
