  • Perma bridge improvements to begin

    Annie Wooden|Jul 20, 2023

Construction on a project to rehabilitate the bridge at Highways 382 and 200 in Perma will begin later this month. Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) held public meetings last week to inform residents and stakeholders about the project. The 635-foot bridge on Highway 382 was built in the 1960s. Brandon Graff, alternative contracting engineer with MDT, said that construction will begin as early as July 24. He noted that the amount of wear and tear on the bridge is normal for one that...

  • REUNION OF FLIGHT

    Jennifer Curran|Jul 20, 2023

It's not every day that one gets the chance to see the iconic Miss Montana DC-3 plane fly across the skies, let alone someone jumping out of the plane. That's just what happened at the second annual Smokejumper Cow Pasture Camp-out last Friday at the Mountain Meadows Ranch in Trout Creek. Miss Montana pilot Art Dykstra flew the 75-year-old plane through mostly blue sky with more than 100 onlookers waiting in anticipation as jumper Al Charters dropped from the plane at 1,200 feet. He soared throu...

  • Plains school leader arrives

    Ed Moreth|Jul 20, 2023

She's going from the boroughs of New York to the big sky of Montana to head the Plains School District. "I am very much looking forward to my new position. While I hope to bring new ideas and opportunities to the position, I am also looking forward to learning new things as well," said Dr. Kathleen Walsh, who was selected for the position of Plains School superintendent, a job held by Thom Chisholm for the last 13 years. She arrived at Plains last Monday and made visits to the school, including...

  • Paradise vet takes flight on Miss Montana

    Ed Moreth|Jul 20, 2023

One Paradise resident enlisted as a soldier during World War II, but the only action she saw was transporting Nazi prisoners of war to and from work details in California. On Friday, however, she hitched a ride in an aircraft that was built in 1944, the same year she went into the military. John Haines, a former Plains resident, knew that 99-year-old Betty Meyer was a veteran of the second World War and he wanted to do something special for her. He was one of the volunteers involved in the...

  • Growing pains

    Annie Wooden|Jul 20, 2023

Plenty of us are torn up that Main Street is torn up. The approximately mile-long project is a needed one, though. Enhanced safety features, smoother surfaces and ADA-compliant sidewalks will make downtown a better place for residents and visitors, especially those using strollers, delivery dollies, wheelchairs, canes or any other assisted-walking devices. Traveling down Main Street – specifically on foot – will be much improved. But oh the pain of getting there. Businesses, many of which rely on summer tourists, are tough to get to this wee...

  • Valuing the American worker

    Jim Elliott|Jul 20, 2023

About once a year I deal with an outfit out of Boise called General Gear or tractorparts.com. I use them when I need parts to repair my crawler tractor which is almost as old as I am and a damn sight better looking. It’s a 1952 Allis Chalmers HD 6B which has served me well over the 45 years I’ve owned it both as a machine and an education. So, when I need parts I go to General Gear. Miracle of miracles they have new parts for my machine. They also seem to have a philosophical bent which inc...

  • Broadening perspectives

    Jul 20, 2023

Student absences can wreak havoc with a teacher’s daily lesson plans, so I was at one time pretty impatient about parents who failed to land their kids in school on time and every school day. One family seemed particularly careless about this, and over some months I had come to judge those parents in uncomplimentary terms, particularly since the father was a county law enforcement officer who from my perspective should have been setting a better example. Then early one morning my wife and I were headed west through Thompson Falls, not yet at t...

7 YEARS AGO • JULY 22, 1953 MAJOR CHANGES ON MAIN STREET The main street of Thompson Falls, which is also the route of the U.S. Highway 10-A (now Highway 200) through town, is in the opening stages of a major change. The additional width is being taken from the railroad right-of-way on the north side, by arrangement with the Northern Pacific Railroad. The two main approaches to the street from the resi...

  • Question of the week: What do you think of the construction on Main Street?

    Jennifer Curran|Jul 20, 2023

Cheryl Guibert, Thompson Falls - “I’m extremely concerned how it’s hurting the business incomes. It would have been a much better plan to do this work at night.” Julissa Bonney, Thompson Falls - “It’s affected us a lot.” Mike Shear, Thompson Falls - “I think it’s totally unnecessary.” Jim Krogman, Thompson Falls - “I love it.” Alivia McCormick, Thompson Falls - “It’s a pain in the butt, but it’s going to make things better in the long run.” Marlaina Mohr, Thompson Falls - “I’m grateful for accessibility for all. Put on your patience....

    Jennifer Curran|Jul 20, 2023

Earning karate belts isn't just for martial arts, at least not for the kids who are earning their belts at the Recorder Karate Class at the Whitepine Grange in Whitepine over a multi-week summer class. A grant from the Mockingbird Foundation made it possible for kids ages 7-14 to participate in a new tradition for aspiring young musicians in the area. A dozen budding musicians from all different levels are partaking in the class that is taught by former Trout Creek music teacher Taylor Etienne...

  • TF singer-songwriter captures stages

    Shannon Brown|Jul 20, 2023

In elementary school, Tanner Laws would go to games with his dad. People would buy him food or pay him to sing popular country songs. By the time Laws reached middle school age, he says he became self conscious and didn't want to sing any more. The saxophone became his new voice. He played in the pep band and enjoyed that musical expression. Then Laws started playing the piano. Classical music was his go-to genre. He liked playing Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven. He enjoyed feeling the music...

  • County volunteers help keep history alive

    Ed Moreth|Jul 20, 2023

A group of Sanders County men and women volunteered their time last week to help preserve a part of Montana history for future generations. More than 50 men and women from around the country gathered at the Savenac Historic Tree Nursery as part of the Passport in Time (PIT) program of the U.S. Forest Service as they have done for the last 27 years, said Heather Berman, who serves on the recreational staff of the Plains-Thompson Falls and Superior ranger districts and was one of the staffers...

    Preston Wenz|Jul 20, 2023

Lots of boats fill the Clark Fork River daily, but this past Saturday, the Trout Creek Community Improvement Association (TCCIA) held its annual Paddlin' Poker Run fundraiser, so kayaks, paddle boards, and drift boats were the focused participants on the water. The number of paddlers increased over last year's total of 101, as this year 113 people paddled their way on the river trying to draw the lucky hand. Folks from Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, and Washington were on the river paddling for the...

  • Mortgage Minute - Temporary Buy Downs

    Michael Scharfe|Jul 20, 2023

Last month I wrote on the availability of buying down the rate where the borrower pays an upfront fee to have the rate reduced for the life of the loan. There is another option when buying down the rate that is called a temporary buy down. The most common option is a 2-1 buy down. With a 2-1 buy down, the interest rate is 2% less than the regular rate for the first year and 1% less than the regular rate in the second year. Then, in the third year, the rate changes to the regular or permanent rate (known as the Note Rate) for the remaining term...
